As I said in the second part of my first regular entry in a while (I think? What even is a "regular" entry in my journal anymore?), I think it's really, really, REALLY great that people are starting to research machine learning for detecting toxic comments online so that they can be filtered out automatically and/or so that people (like me!) can learn what makes their comments potentially toxic and how to avoid it.

You know what would be even better, though?

If I could actually use it.

Many of the websites and videos I've seen about these tools for detecting toxic comments make it seem like you can just type or paste in a comment and BAM, it will give scores representing the likelihood of it being a toxic comment for various potential reasons. So I thought "oh hey, I can paste in of my LJ/DW entries and comments one by one and it'll tell me which ones are the best and worst, and then I can rank them and sort them into 'cringe levels' like I wanted to a couple years ago!"

But finding a website that lets me do that is harder than I thought...
https://www.perspectiveapi.com/ - Has a note saying to not enter personally identifiable information, so naturally I'm wondering what exactly that entails and if certain things in some my entries count. Seems like this would be the easiest to use, though, if I knew for a fact that doing so would be okay. (EDIT: Well, I tried this one out with a random sentence that isn't from my journal and actually got a rating with it! I guess I'm gonna use this one after all - I'll just save entries with my name in them for last, I suppose. But it would be nice to figure out how to use one of these other tools too in case the scores differ.)
https://www.unitary.ai/product - This page has an interface where you can input your own text and hit "Compute" and it will estimate the toxicity of it... except not because the "interface" on that page is just a mockup apparently! They went out of their way to make it look like you could highlight the example text and replace it and click Compute but it doesn't actually let you do that? :(
https://detoxifai.com/ - This one has a live demo where you can type in a comment (yes, this one actually lets you type into it!) and click "Analyze Toxicity" and... it says "Processing" and then never does anything.

And pretty much everything else I've found requires me to install Python, learn how to code in Python, install Git (or remember whether or not my current laptop is the one I once had Git installed on before), relearn how to use Git when I never understood the first time, and/or learn how to make an API just to use it. :(

Flash emulator

Mon, Sep. 2nd, 2019 16:46
matt1993: (conga of the apocalypse)
Dear larsiusprime and anyone else who happens to be working on this Flash Player emulator:

I commend you for taking the initiative and trying to find a way for Flash content to be preserved for future generations; however, I would like to ask you one thing:

Why is it that, according to the GitHub page for this project, nothing has been done whatsoever except for the addition of the readme file a year ago? Especially now that we have less than 500 days left until the death of Flash?

If you're making any progress, please let us know. (Or if you are posting status updates somewhere public and I just don't know it, maybe make that easier to find?) Seeing that the latest update was a year ago isn't exactly making me confident about the future of my favorite Flash content. :(
matt1993: (missingno.)
Here's a better post than my earlier friends-only entry... (EDIT: The earlier entry is public now because turns out the last time I posted about something like that, it was also public, so...)

Remember how earlier this year I found those videos about making NES games 3D automatically? I found a different video that takes a different approach to that:

For that matter, I've posted videos by this guy before when he wrote an AI to learn how to play NES games. :)

SOMEONE on here sure has been falling behind on his promise to archive a few more of his Miiverse posts on LJ and DW every-- oh wait, that someone is me, isn't it... :P

If I'd been on schedule, this entry would've been posted between June 17 and 23, 2018. It's kind of hard to motivate myself to post these sometimes because I have to write the DW version of the entry, have that automatically be cross-posted to LJ, and then edit the LJ version to use the LJ copies of all the images (community icons, handwritten posts, tiny icons like the one for Yeahs, etc.)...

Hopefully it'll become easier now, though... Recently I made a little program where I can write the LJ and DW versions of an entry simultaneously, where I type into one text box and the program copies it into separate text boxes for LJ and DW; it copies text into both text boxes until it gets to a "▌" character (meaning everything until the next "▐" or "█" should be on LJ only), a "▐" character (meaning everything until the next "▌" or "█" should be on DW only), or a "█" character (meaning everything until the next "▌" or "▐" should be on both). For instance, the last word in this sentence is different on here from what it is on LiveJournal. The use of left/right half block characters makes sense to me because I typically put LJ-related tabs on the left side of my screen and DW-related tabs on the right so I can tell them apart. :)

(Though this one still took a while. Maybe I need to modify my program to add shortcuts specifically to make these Miiverse backup posts easier by making it so that if I type ☺Y☻ or ☺SSB4☻ or ☺:O☻, for instance, it'll be replaced with the Yeahs icon or the SSB4 community icon or my Mii's shocked expression, complete with it being the LJ version on LJ and the DW version on DW?)

Super Smash Bros. for 3DS/Wii U Community
Matt 06/17/2013 10:54 PM

5 10

(In addition to my first Miiverse post in over a month, this was also my first one in the Super Smash Bros. series community. The backup Nintendo sent me incorrectly says these are in the Super Smash Bros. for 3DS/Wii U community, but that was the community created after the game was released, which I never posted in because by then I'd already become sick of Miiverse; the SSB series community was created after the Villager, Mega Man, and Wii Fit Trainer reveals at E3 and existed until the game was released.

Oh boy, I remember the SSB community... )

Two more things to point out: This had the second-most comments of any of my posts on Miiverse - surpassed only by that surprisingly popular "unlikely vine, likely vine" one - and was my first Miiverse post to end up having more comments than Yeahs.)

Apparently there's a trend of drawing stuff in Fruit Cart. At first I thought "pointless but might as well try it" but when I started I thought "It's harder than it looks…so THAT'S why they do it!"

(That's supposed to be my Mii. I don't know why I merely said that there was a trend of people drawing "stuff" in Yoshi's Fruit Cart if the only pictures I remember anyone drawing in that game were of their Miis. I don't think my drawing turned out well... I found it hard enough to draw my Mii as it was, and then to try and do so with a single connected line...)

Finally beat the Mini Mountaineer challenge! But if getting a gold medal for it is required to unlock anything, it still might as well be "Prove the Riemann hypothesis without touching the ground" :(

0 0

(And this was my last post in the New Super Mario Bros. U community, excluding posts about New Super Luigi U - and my only post in that community to be about Challenge Mode instead of the main adventure. Makes sense since I'd already gotten all 5 stars in the main adventure.

This was probably also my most obscure joke throughout my entire history on Miiverse, too... if you don't know what the Riemann hypothesis is, all you need to know to understand my joke is that it's a certain mathy thing that is probably true, but so difficult to definitively prove that so far no one has been able to do so. I guess I was hoping that people would at least know that, but I was wrong. This is about the only reason I know what it is, in fact.

Back to NSMBU... I still don't think I've 100% completed all of the challenges in Challenge Mode - I'm pretty sure there's still some I haven't beaten, with gold medals or otherwise.

Which New Super Mario Bros. U levels did I post about the most?

You'd think that given how easy it probably is to misunderstand my previous entry, I would've posted again as soon as I thought of something else to post about. But nope, somehow I let an easily-misunderstood entry be the newest one for a month minus a few hours.

[Great. I have to link to an easily-misunderstood entry AGAIN - and one that's now even MORE easily-misunderstood since some of you aren't familiar with the sort of stuff I worried about almost constantly from November 2011 to November 2015 {and to a lesser extent, after that}.]

March 2016

Lately I've just had SO MUCH to do that not only do I not get much time to relax, but whenever I do get to take a break, it's usually not actually that relaxing because I still end up thinking about the stuff that has to get done soon.

matt1993: (pass)
Sorry I haven't been able to post in a while. That semester was so intense, I rarely even had enough free time to complain about it on LiveJournal!

I'm gonna go ahead and assume that a) everything I know on LJ except my journal has dramatically changed in the time that I haven't posted, just like it did the last time I went a month or so without posting, and b) I'm not going to be able to adequately make up for the lack of posts. But I guess I'll try anyway by posting how I generally felt about each class:

And sorry for forgetting to put a LJ-cut at first :( )

And... that's about all I can do to catch up on posting for now. I'd have posted more quiz/meme reruns if I'd done any quizzes or memes between 5 years before my last entry and 5 years before this entry, but as it is, the next one's still not until the 14th.

Disprove the result "If this entry has

matt1993: (pass)
Well, looks like my Psychology class (while possibly not as reminiscent of the Forbidden Comment Threads as I was worried it'd be) is A) still going to be pretty tough and B) not yet guaranteed to never turn into a heated debate, even though one hasn't happened yet. Software Engineering and Game Graphics look like they're gonna be pretty tough too.

Things usually don't turn out this way until after I make a post saying that things are going well so far, so why isn't that the case this time? :(

Also, a meme I got from [livejournal.com profile] cactus_rs:

5 of My Userpics Explained )

And it wasn't even real cream cheese,
it was light cream cheese! And now
you want me to run off and
repost another entry?!
matt1993: (updated prtsc land me)
There's only two votes so far in this poll, but I gave each thing to do 1 point for each first-choice vote it has, 1/2 a point for each second-choice vote, 1/4 a point for each third-choice vote, etc., and catching up on my friends page more is currently in the lead with 1.25 points.

However, as I've mentioned in a couple of places after posting that poll, realizing how many unfinished projects I had made me depressed for a while because it sunk in even deeper that I probably will never finish all of them, and I felt even worse about abandoning most of them for two or three years. While I feel a little better about it right now, this probably isn't the best time to risk seeing much more online drama.

I'll continue reading new entries in my friends page at least once every 3 days like I've been doing (and I might read it a little more often now that I've seen the poll results), but I really think I should post the lists of non-LJ-related things I'm worried you'll hate me for and of things that remind me of the Forbidden Comment Threads fairly soon (because, remember, I probably do have to do so eventually for my mental health).

At the same time, I also don't want to wait too long before I finish catching up on my friends page, so I came up with the idea to work on both things at the same time with this method:

Blah blah blah blah blah... )

But even that compromise doesn't seem like something I should work on right this moment given the state I've been in (but, fortunately, not this moment), although I'll probably start switching back and forth between other things and this later on when I'm in an even better mood.

The next highest project in the results is finishing those autism self-help books, with exactly 1 point, but I think right now I should go with something that I won't have a lot of time to do next semester while I still have the chance.

The third highest score is new userpics with 0.5078125 points (one second choice and one eighth choice), so for now I'm going with that :) Although that will also have to wait for a bit... I was planning on making a separate table and poll about my userpic ideas, but all I've finished so far is a list of them. (And given how I only remember some of my ideas when I'm not writing any down, I'm probably not even done with that...) So I'm gonna have to get started pretty soon!

In the meantime, here's a few videos I've been meaning to post here!

http://mostexcitingworld.com/video-helmet-camera-captures-firefighter-bringing-a-tiny-kitten-back-to-life/ - I don't think I can embed the video, but this firefighter actually took the time to revive a kitten he found. Very heartwarming! (EDIT IN 2018: The link is broken now, but I found an archived version of the article with the video still missing and the video itself separately.)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8bB7obyuuY8 I can't embed this either since my Internet is being slow, but these people recreated the dance scene from A Charlie Brown Christmas. Cute!

Presumably, repost just the videos and

Oh, it's no use. The past is gone now (obviously not as much so as I pretended it was in my previous entry, but still), and my journal may never again become as interesting as it used to be no matter how hard I try. Not that an entry that's partly about PrtSc Land could be interesting anyway...

In other news, remember how I said most of my classes this semester were easier than I expected? I don't even think I specifically said that I hadn't had any essays yet, and yet the day after I posted that entry, I got an essay assignment. In Programming Languages class, of all things. Due December 6, but still...

Why does that happen EVERY time I post that classes are going well?!?

Hmm...

I also expected most of my professors to give out a lot of Enya concert tickets and pre-release copies of Super Mario 3D World, but that still hasn't happened at all this semester.

In a brief moment of insanity, decide that this is interesting enough to repost

In other news, about a year ago today I got over my depression about the Forbidden Comment Threads just in time for Christmas, and in fact, got over it for the longest period of time so far; in fact, at the time I'd thought I'd gotten over it completely. But now I'm not only still depressed about it about half of the time, I'm also depressed about anything that even vaguely reminds me of the Forbidden Comment Threads (and now, many more things fall under this category), and just as much as when the Forbidden Comment Threads were actually happening. So I don't see myself nearly overcoming it again this year. I'll probably be happier on Christmas Day, but aside from the fact that I'm still not depressed every moment of my life, that's it. :(

(By the way, [livejournal.com profile] pathvain_aelien and [livejournal.com profile] ellaina02, I added a few things after the proofreading)

What's sad is that recently-- Well, okay, not that recently, due to the long amount of time it took to write this entry, have it proofread, and continue to worry about whether or not it makes sense even after I had it proofread. But last October, I was hit with a realization similar to Character 15's, and I'm not even a randomly generated webcomic character.

Rant about the inevitable part of this entry that doesn't make sense
matt1993: (2010 nnwm procrastinator)
I'm finally done with my second semester of college! Although so far, the only courses I know for sure I passed are Computer Science (with a B) and Chemistry Lab (with I'm not sure what). I did feel more confident about Computer Architecture and Chemistry class than I did with Computer Science, though. No idea about Statistics, though :(

I used to be good at math! In first grade, while the rest of the class was taught addition and subtraction, I was taught that and multiplication, and as those of you know, I took Calculus I as a high school junior and did well in it. Whatever happened to that?

Ah well, at least I get to relax for...about 12 days, because I have to take two summer classes and one of them's English II. :( So I'm probably still not going to catch up on my friends page yet if I want to have even the slightest chance of getting done with my program to prioritize everything before I need it for my summer classes.

By the way, I might not get to check my friends page for a while again. I've decided that I really need to cut down on the stuff that I check before I work on my program until I get it finished. So if there's a post that you want me to see, you probably ought to link to it here.

For this is a jolly good repost button
matt1993: (roy 666)
Okay, this is really creepy.

For the past 666 weeks or so, I've been working on a fairly long LJ post with more images than I've made for a single post before. About as many as you'd find in the average Hyperbole and a Half post, in fact, which is why it's taken so long even though most of the images are edits of images I found online. (Of course, one of the ones that isn't is a huge graph...)

Today, my calculator (which I've made a program on to keep track of how fast I need to work if I wanna finish the graph and post this entry before the next semester of college) ran out of battery power, and since I wasn't sure if we had any more lithium batteries (since replacing the regular batteries didn't help), I made an Excel spreadsheet instead.

Now here's the creepy part. About 8-10 times today, the spreadsheet's calculations gave numbers containing 666 (e.g., 16662.somethingsomething).

Plus, recently I've been rolling 3 dice (or 4 when there were 4 unfinished parts of the entry) to determine what parts of the entry I'm allowed to work on next (e.g., if I get a 1 or 4, a 2 or 5, and a 3 or 6, it's up to me, but if I only get 2's and/or 5's I have to work on the graph); just recently, I rolled the dice, and out of 216 possible outcomes, guess what I got?

6-6-6

Even scarier is the fact that just yesterday (well, technically the day before that since it's after midnight), [livejournal.com profile] pathvain_aelien saw the dice and thought they read 6-6-6. They didn't, but still, scary how all these actual 666's ended up appearing... :O

Dip this entry in holy water

It's hard to describe this journal in just a few paragraphs... but I'll try

Just an autistic guy born in 1993 (hence the username) who's had this journal since I was 14. Has trouble phrasing things well especially in earlier entries, so keep that in mind.

My interests have fluctuated in the 17 years since I've had this journal, but the following has remained constant:
- I like Mario games (mainly the platformers, Mario Kart, Mario Party) and Super Smash Bros.
- I like Garfield
- I like Homestar Runner
- I like Enya
- And I've always loved the idea of wacky crossovers between ANY of my interests, whether it's in the form of a short-lived webcomic in 2006-2008, a short-lived backwards lyrics site in 2008, writing down weird dreams in 2009-2011, playing Tomodachi Life a lot in 2014-2016, or what most of my posts are about these days: playing around with Character.AI starting in 2023. I still can't believe I'm actually in a world where an AI of Enya can talk to AIs of Mario or Garfield or even my favorite obscure characters like Mary O. from Super Mario Maker. :O
