So... Remember all those times when I panicked because LJ or DW or some other site I like (or sometimes not even one I like!) went down for a few minutes or hours and I thought it might turn out to be a permanent outage? Remember when sometimes I even thought it might be an indication that the entire Internet might go down?

That's because I was afraid that something like what happened TODAY would happen.

I know some of you thought I was overreacting those times when I saw websites go down temporarily. Even I eventually looked back on those times and thought I was overreacting. But, apparently, I was right after all - it IS possible for hundreds of websites to go down at once without warning. I know they're claiming that the issue has been fixed, but has it REALLY been fixed? Apparently some sites are still experiencing issues hours later. Those hours could turn into weeks or even years. And even if the entire issue IS resolved, how do we know it won't happen again?!

([livejournal.com profile] pathvain_aelien, I know you told me that websites go down all the time and it's not a big deal. But this IS different! It's usually not HUNDREDS of websites all at once! Look it up!)

We should all be scared. VERY scared. HOW IS ANYONE CALM ABOUT THIS?!
matt1993: (2010 nnwm procrastinator)
You know what?

I decided I'm not gonna post anymore until the coronavirus pandemic is over. (Unless I change my mind for whatever reason.)

It's pretty clear that:
- If I DO post about the coronavirus, I get seen as a bad person for reacting to it in the way I am (wishing social distancing would EVENTUALLY end and stating that I don't think I can be happy again until I know it will end eventually; thinking about it so much since so many things I enjoy might be cancelled or delayed; etc.) or for the way I word it.
- If I post about anything OTHER than the coronavirus, then (assuming I somehow successfully do so without mentioning the virus once, which is almost impossible) I get seen as a bad person for talking about anything else.

So, looks like my best course of action is to not post at all until I can do so without having to worry about being criticized for what I choose to post about. I'll probably still reply to comments, but that's it.

See you when the pandemic is over!... IF the pandemic is ever over, which I still don't think it ever will be...

Two weeks later, and STILL no actual, definite proof that it's not the end of the world? :'(
matt1993: (conga of the apocalypse)
Can one of you please collide with the Earth already??? I CAN'T TAKE ANYMORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
matt1993: (painbow)
Okay. So. Every sporting event in the entire world is cancelled. Every restaurant is closed. Every grocery store is closed. No movies or video games will ever be released again. E3 is cancelled. TV shows are being cancelled. obligatory in-joke incoming: Authors are being cancelled. Every xkcd comic from now on until the end of time will be about the coronavirus, and all other webcomics that still update are probably following suit. You can't go to ANY news site without hearing about the coronavirus.

We're all running out of ways to cope with the constant unrest in the world. And now we can't even go to NON-news sites without hearing about the coronavirus. If the Homestar Runner Wiki - HOMESTAR. RUNNER. WIKI. OF ALL PLACES. - is now insisting that we all shouldn't get to be happy right now and STILL need to be repeatedly kicked while we're down is any indication, we're about to COMPLETELY run out of ways to cope.

People say that the best way to deal with anxiety is to stay away from news sites for a while so we don't keep hearing about it constantly. THEY SAY THAT LIKE IT'S EASY. THEY SAY THAT LIKE IT'S *POSSIBLE*.

Well, seeing as it's not actually possible to browse the Internet without constantly being reminded that the world is ending, it is now my duty to do what I can to MAKE that possible!

I'm going to stockpile a list of links to all websites I know of that I know for a fact (or can reasonably assume) do NOT mention or reference the coronavirus in any way whatsoever. It doesn't matter what they're about. I'm not even going to sort them by category or any other sensible order. Just as long as they DON'T mention or reference the coronavirus in any way. I will periodically update this list.

Before we begin, I ask you all to:
1) Let me know of any other websites you know of that meet the condition mentioned above. I want this to become a COMPLETE list of websites that meet that condition, not just a list of websites *I* have heard of.
2) If any of these websites DO mention the coronavirus, please let me know so I can remove them from the list.
3) Share this entry with others if you found it helpful.
4) DO NOT GET UPSET AT PEOPLE FOR NOT MENTIONING THE CORONAVIRUS. THAT'S EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE OF WHAT PEOPLE WITH ANXIETY NEED. WE HAVE THE RIGHT TO TAKE OUR MINDS OFF THE NEWS IF WE WANT TO.

Now, let's begin! (Last updated: March 24, 2020.)

Therefore, I would recommend this site even if it mentioned the virus directly.)

Dear Homestar Runner Wiki:

OKAY. I GET IT. THE CORONAVIRUS IS A BIG DEAL AND WE HAVE TO CLOSE EVERY MAJOR SOCIAL GATHERING AND BASICALLY DESTROY THE ENTIRE WORLD TO STOP IT FROM SPREADING.

THAT DOESN'T MEAN YOU HAVE TO CHANGE YOUR LOGO TO A SICK HOMESTAR.

LARGE SOCIAL GATHERINGS HAVE TO BE CLOSED TO PROTECT EVERYONE, BUT YOU'RE A WEBSITE, NOT A LARGE SOCIAL GATHERING. YOU DON'T HAVE TO DO THAT AND IN FACT YOU'RE NOT HELPING BY DOING SO. YOU'RE SPREADING THE FEAR AND UNREST THAT EVERYONE ALREADY HAS, FOR NO GOOD REASON.

I WOULD LIKE THERE TO BE *ONE* WEBSITE THAT I CAN LOOK AT WITHOUT BEING REMINDED THAT IT'S THE END OF THE WORLD!!!!!!
matt1993: (no you're infected!)
Okay, I was hoping I wouldn't have to make a post about the coronavirus, and initially I wasn't all that worried about it, but I've been hearing about the coronavirus so frequently, for so long, that I have to ask:

1) Is it the end of the world? The way people talk about it, it doesn't sound like there is any way the coronavirus threat will EVER be over.
2) Am I a horrible person for not posting a single entry about it until now and not really wanting to talk about it? Or for having been the same way about the swine flu back in 2009?
3) Am I a horrible person for... Wow. I could've sworn that there was an additional question in the form "am I a horrible person for _____" that I was going to ask, but I must be so concerned about being seen as a horrible person that I forgot what the question was.

I'm pretty sure the answer to 2 and 3 is going to be yes. :(

One hour to go.

Dear everyone who has told me, or their YouTube followers, or whoever, that the YouTube COPPA thing is nothing to worry about:

There's enough of you by now that I can KIND of take your word for it. But I am going to be SO MAD if you turn out to be wrong and this is the end of YouTube as we know it after all.
matt1993: (conga of the apocalypse)
I thought the fact that a webcomic I've enjoyed for years is no longer working and may be unfixable was scary.

TURNS OUT SOMETHING EVEN WORSE IS GOING TO HAPPEN.

It's December now? GOOD!! Because at least there's one New Year's meme I can get out of the way now, six days before I get too distracted playing Super Smash Bros. Ultimate to remember to do it. :)

Go to your Calendar and find the first entry for each month of 2018. Post the first line of it in your journal, and that's your "Year In Review".

January 2018

I think there's a glitch in my copy of Windows 7. It says today's date is "1/1/2018". I thought the year 2018 didn't exist - didn't the world end in 2017?

February 2018

YES! I'm FINALLY done fixing all of my entries in 2007-2010! (Hopefully...)

March 2018

It's Friday already and not Tuesday or Wednesday... but at least this is still the most regular feature I've had in my journal since the weekly Garfield Randomizer comics in 2009!

(This, of course, is about my weekly Miiverse backup entries... which of course did not remain a regular feature for long...)

April 2018

https://www.mariowiki.com/Mary_O._and_Yamamura:_The_Movie

May 2018

So I found this two-part YouTube video called "500 Characters I Want In Smash Bros. Switch"...

June 2018

About time I posted some more of these. Once again, I meant to post them last week...

July 2018

- On June 14 or 15 or so I saw The Incredibles 2, then saw Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom a week or two later! I liked both :)

August 2018

It took four days (more than that if you count the time I spent putting it off), but I'm finally done fixing one of my longest and most cringeworthy entries ever! :D

September 2018

Well... it's September 4. So Sunday was the first anniversary of the day I was finally motivated - by a glitch LJ had for about three weeks where a lot of images were suddenly broken in entries - to finally get around to fixing the broken images AND everything else I wanted to fix in my entries on both LJ and DW.

October 2018

WARNING: I am extremely depressed and therefore this entry is going to make no sense whatsoever because I am physically incapable of wording an opinion very well when I am depressed.

November 2018

[livejournal.com profile] pathvain_aelien stayed at my apartment for a while; in that time we watched the How To Train Your Dragon TV show! (Specifically, the third of the three shows there were. P_A, what was the third show called again? Dragons: Race to the Edge.) We made it to season 4. :) Have any of you watched it?

December 2018

It's December now? GOOD!! Because at least there's one New Year's meme I can get out of the way now, six days before I get too distracted playing Super Smash Bros. Ultimate to remember to do it. :)

It's no secret that I've fallen really far behind on my plan to backup some of my Miiverse posts on LJ/DW once a week. So I have an idea of how to get on a regular schedule that I'll have more motivation to stick to: start posting them once every two weeks instead of one, and act as if this had been my schedule all along starting from my first Miiverse backup entry - meaning the second Miiverse backup entry is now retroactively considered to be posted a week early (being one week after the first rather than two), the third one is retroactively considered to be two weeks early (being two weeks after the first instead of four), and so on.

As I've posted 23 Miiverse backup entries so far, that means the next one would get posted 23×2=46 weeks after the first, which would be the week of... December 12? So this means I'm now "still" caught up! :)

Do me a favor. The next time I consider doing some sort of regular feature on LJ or DW that requires me to upload new images or post entries with images in them once a week, please remind me about this and try to convince me to bring it down to once every two weeks...

----

Finally, now that the last Super Smash Bros. Direct is out, I'll give you another taste of just how weird it is in the mind of Matt1993:

- When I first saw a screenshot of Kirby's Peach copy ability in Super Smash Bros. Melee (when I was 9), I somehow didn't realize that was Peach's crown - my mind jumped to the conclusion that King Bob-omb from Super Mario 64 was playable and either that was his pink alternate costume or Kirby's King Bob-omb copy ability.
- I made up an entire moveset for Mary O. & Yamamura from Super Mario Maker and posted it earlier this year. (And I've brought up the idea even earlier than that - see the music tag on that April Fools entry.)
- And somehow, despite all of that, I still at no point expected a Piranha Plant to be a playable character.

Also, why is it that so many Super Smash Bros. fans hate each other over who's playable or different opinions about who they want to playable?

This got rant-ier than the rest of the entry. Long story short: I like Piranha Plant and other unexpected SSB characters more than most of the Internet seems to )

*Why couldn't this song have existed when MY world came to an end? It would have been so appropriate for that!
matt1993: (drive-thru whale)
About time I posted some more of these. Once again, I meant to post them last week...

Today you get to see the exciting[citation needed] conclusion to the question of "did we ever get that last Star Coin five years ago?" :P

Yesterday was April 9, which means it's now been a full YEAR since that day I thought EVERYONE was leaving LiveJournal and posted that entry about not wanting to leave that made it onto LJ's homepage.

I don't know what's upsetting: the fact that this was a YEAR ago now, or the fact that I STILL find out occasionally, when I least expect it, that someone I know has left LJ. :( At least this happens less often now?

And in case it's not clear to those of you on DW: I still prefer LJ. Sue me.

In other news, I'm behind on those Miiverse backup entries. Hopefully I'll get the one I was supposed to post last week posted soon. :)

Okay.

HOW, JUST HOW, DID PHOTOBUCKET MANAGE TO REPLACE ALL MY DREAMWIDTH USERPICS WITH THEIR PLACEHOLDER IMAGE?!

HOW IS THAT EVEN POSSIBLE??

My userpics aren't even hosted ON Photobucket!!!

I'm... quite scared right now. :O

Fortunately, my LJ userpics don't seem to be affected for whatever reason. (YET...)

You know what? I decided I'm giving up on this whole "keep a DW account as a backup" thing and going back to just using LJ. It was so much easier when I only had one journal to maintain... (Though while I highly doubt I'll change my mind about this, please, if you list me as a friend on here, keep me listed just in case).

Goodbye, DreamWidth.

Woefully late in posting this, but:

----

Go to Wordle and...

1) Paste in all entries you posted in January 2017 and make a Wordle configured any way you like
2) Paste in all entries you posted in February 2017 and make another Wordle configured any way you like
...
12) Paste in all entries you posted in December 2017 and make another Wordle configured any way you like
13) Make a Wordle out of your entries from ALL months of 2017, configured any way you like

Then post all of these Wordles to your LiveJournal and/or DreamWidth and/or whatever other blogging site(s) you're on!

You may do steps 1 - 12 only or step 13 only if you prefer.

It's up to you if you include subject lines, comments, community entries, friends-only entries, music tags, location tags, etc., and it's up to you whether you post your Wordles in a public or friends-only entry. Anything else I didn't think of is probably optional as well.

And if you're on more than one journal site (in this example, LJ and DW), you may do this for your LJ entries only, your DW entries only, your entries on both sites combined, all of the above - whichever. And you may post it to only one site or the other, or to both - whichever you prefer.

----

Personally I opted to do this for my LJ and DW entries separately AND combined, and post all three versions of each to both LJ and DW. Which means this took about six times as long to make as it usually does...

Left: LJ only
Center: LJ+DW combined
Right: DW only

You can also tell because I tried to skew the colors of the LJ-only ones towards LJ-blue and away from DW-red/pink, and vice versa for the DW-only ones. Looking at how some of the color schemes turned out, though, I might need to adjust my algorithm before my 2018 Wordle Year in Review...

Wordles under the cut! )

Oh, and this year, I thought of a little word search game I could add onto this meme! (you don't have to make a little game like this if you make your own Wordle Year in Review though)

Wordle Search! )

Well, today is the day that Miiverse is shut down at 10 PM PST. (which would be midnight in Central where I live, so... I guess for me, it's not actually today? Whatever.)

Out of all the drastic changes this year (so far), I think this is the only one that I'm not all that upset about. Miiverse started out as probably the most positive online community ever, but it didn't stay that way for long - eventually it went so downhill, it's been years since the last time I visited Miiverse itself. I'd still read posts whenever they appeared in game (Super Mario 3D World, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Nintendo Badge Arcade, etc.), but I think the last time I went to Miiverse itself was 2014. Maybe 2015. I didn't even hurriedly try to find a way to save my own posts somewhere. (Though while looking up information about the discontinuation, I did notice that there's a way to request a downloadable archive of my posts, but I doubt I'll have time to figure out where to go to do that in the next few hours.)

...okay, forget what I said about not being all that disappointed. NOW it's making me kind of sad. :( Maybe I'll try and get an archive of my posts after all.

EDIT: Submitted the request! That was easier than expected. So easy, I must've done it twice by accident because it told me I submitted it already. :)

While I'm on Miiverse for the last time, have some random stats about my Miiverse account:

Following 53 users

256 posts (hey, a nice nerdy number! And I wasn't even trying to have any of these be interesting numbers!)

1,788 Yeahs

Last post was on November 23, 2016 in Nintendo Badge Arcade. (Though it ALMOST was not the last post; for Valentine's Day 2017, I had every intention of celebrating by putting badges of the lovely Mary O. and a bunch of hearts from Zelda on my HOME menu because I'm the sort of dork who would at least consider doing that and posting that to the Nintendo Badge Arcade community. I did in fact make such a HOME menu, but didn't post it because it wasn't Valentine's Day yet - and for whatever reason, making it again on Valentine's Day and posting it slipped my mind. Probably because that was so soon after work started.)

I only made two Miiverse posts overall in 2016, and none in 2015 - the last one before that was on July 29, 2014 in the NES Remix 2 community. (I'm not surprised that this was so soon after Lucina and Robin were confirmed for Super Smash Bros. 4 - I do remember how the last time I checked Miiverse regularly, it seemed like EVERY SINGLE POST in the SSB community was like "With my Levin Sword, I'll _____".)

Speaking of which, my bio is:

"I'm a sensei; i.e., SNES am I!
(translation: I've been playing video games since the NES and SNES. My all-time favorite classic game: Super Mario World!)

I can't wait to play Super Smash Bros. 4, but I'd be even MORE excited if people would stop whining about the roster being just SLIGHTLY different from what they want. I really hope that there'll be less of that once the game's released..."

...SSB3DS has been out for over three years, and in a couple of weeks, that'll also be true of SSBU. I went THREE YEARS without updating that bio. Why do I have the sudden urge to turn up the hearing aid that I don't have?

Well, whatever. At least now my Miiverse posts will be turned into an ice cube so future generations can thaw them out and marvel at my same-length legs! :)

It's hard to describe this journal in just a few paragraphs... but I'll try

Just an autistic guy born in 1993 (hence the username) who's had this journal since I was 14. Has trouble phrasing things well especially in earlier entries, so keep that in mind.

My interests have fluctuated in the 17 years since I've had this journal, but the following has remained constant:
- I like Mario games (mainly the platformers, Mario Kart, Mario Party) and Super Smash Bros.
- I like Garfield
- I like Homestar Runner
- I like Enya
- And I've always loved the idea of wacky crossovers between ANY of my interests, whether it's in the form of a short-lived webcomic in 2006-2008, a short-lived backwards lyrics site in 2008, writing down weird dreams in 2009-2011, playing Tomodachi Life a lot in 2014-2016, or what most of my posts are about these days: playing around with Character.AI starting in 2023. I still can't believe I'm actually in a world where an AI of Enya can talk to AIs of Mario or Garfield or even my favorite obscure characters like Mary O. from Super Mario Maker. :O
