AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WHY IS MY MODEM NOT WORKING?!?!??!?!??!

OF ALL THE DAYS MY MODEM COULD QUIT WORKING, IT HAD TO STOP WORKING ON MY BIRTHDAY?!?!?!?

AND WHY IS IT STILL NOT WORKING TWO DAYS LATER?!?!??!!

I've kinda been able to use the Internet with my phone as a hotspot, but WHY DOES MY LAPTOP RANDOMLY REFUSE TO DETECT MY PHONE'S SIGNAL FOR NO APPARENT REASON?!?!?!?!

Yeah, I'm declaring myself to still be 27. My birthday this year DOES NOT count as a birthday.

So... Remember all those times when I panicked because LJ or DW or some other site I like (or sometimes not even one I like!) went down for a few minutes or hours and I thought it might turn out to be a permanent outage? Remember when sometimes I even thought it might be an indication that the entire Internet might go down?

That's because I was afraid that something like what happened TODAY would happen.

I know some of you thought I was overreacting those times when I saw websites go down temporarily. Even I eventually looked back on those times and thought I was overreacting. But, apparently, I was right after all - it IS possible for hundreds of websites to go down at once without warning. I know they're claiming that the issue has been fixed, but has it REALLY been fixed? Apparently some sites are still experiencing issues hours later. Those hours could turn into weeks or even years. And even if the entire issue IS resolved, how do we know it won't happen again?!

([livejournal.com profile] pathvain_aelien, I know you told me that websites go down all the time and it's not a big deal. But this IS different! It's usually not HUNDREDS of websites all at once! Look it up!)

We should all be scared. VERY scared. HOW IS ANYONE CALM ABOUT THIS?!

Cursed

Wed, Jun. 3rd, 2020 13:30
matt1993: (channeler possessed)
Help! I've been placed under a dark curse that causes me to mindlessly refresh YouTube and Twitter over and over looking for things that will upset me, no matter how much I want to focus on my chores and my hobbies!

This curse, of course, is called "anxiety".

EDIT: You might be thinking "well, just block YouTube and Twitter!" I considered it, but that's not a practical solution to me. First of all, those two sites were just two examples; blocking one site will just cause me to check another site a lot more. I learned that when I made that resolution to stop checking TV Tropes so much. Second, there's many things I ENJOY seeing on YouTube and a few on Twitter as well. Third, I've also come across very good news from the same sites - including one just after I made this post.
matt1993: (painbow)
Okay. So. Every sporting event in the entire world is cancelled. Every restaurant is closed. Every grocery store is closed. No movies or video games will ever be released again. E3 is cancelled. TV shows are being cancelled. obligatory in-joke incoming: Authors are being cancelled. Every xkcd comic from now on until the end of time will be about the coronavirus, and all other webcomics that still update are probably following suit. You can't go to ANY news site without hearing about the coronavirus.

We're all running out of ways to cope with the constant unrest in the world. And now we can't even go to NON-news sites without hearing about the coronavirus. If the Homestar Runner Wiki - HOMESTAR. RUNNER. WIKI. OF ALL PLACES. - is now insisting that we all shouldn't get to be happy right now and STILL need to be repeatedly kicked while we're down is any indication, we're about to COMPLETELY run out of ways to cope.

People say that the best way to deal with anxiety is to stay away from news sites for a while so we don't keep hearing about it constantly. THEY SAY THAT LIKE IT'S EASY. THEY SAY THAT LIKE IT'S *POSSIBLE*.

Well, seeing as it's not actually possible to browse the Internet without constantly being reminded that the world is ending, it is now my duty to do what I can to MAKE that possible!

I'm going to stockpile a list of links to all websites I know of that I know for a fact (or can reasonably assume) do NOT mention or reference the coronavirus in any way whatsoever. It doesn't matter what they're about. I'm not even going to sort them by category or any other sensible order. Just as long as they DON'T mention or reference the coronavirus in any way. I will periodically update this list.

Before we begin, I ask you all to:
1) Let me know of any other websites you know of that meet the condition mentioned above. I want this to become a COMPLETE list of websites that meet that condition, not just a list of websites *I* have heard of.
2) If any of these websites DO mention the coronavirus, please let me know so I can remove them from the list.
3) Share this entry with others if you found it helpful.
4) DO NOT GET UPSET AT PEOPLE FOR NOT MENTIONING THE CORONAVIRUS. THAT'S EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE OF WHAT PEOPLE WITH ANXIETY NEED. WE HAVE THE RIGHT TO TAKE OUR MINDS OFF THE NEWS IF WE WANT TO.

Now, let's begin! (Last updated: March 24, 2020.)

Therefore, I would recommend this site even if it mentioned the virus directly.)

As if it wasn't bad enough already that one of my favorite webcomics of all time is now 99.999% gone and it's unlikely that it'll ever return and all of my favorite YouTube channels, or at least the ones about gaming, could all disappear and I still remain unconvinced that they won't, now I heard that FACEBOOK WENT DOWN EARLIER TODAY???

I don't get on Facebook very often nowadays, but... it's Facebook. If Facebook can go down for that long, nothing else on the Internet is safe!

I thought I would get to enjoy Thanksgiving break, but how can I enjoy it if the whole Internet seems to be disappearing at once????
matt1993: (conga of the apocalypse)

I was the SECOND person to vote in Super Mario Wiki's new poll!

Sadly, I think this has less to do with me having really good timing and more to do with me habitually typing the URLs of this and a few other wikis into the address bar multiple times a day to procrastinate when I know there's probably not anything new. :P

(In case you're seeing this long after the fact, the poll itself was "Which Super Smash Bros. Ultimate newcomer are you looking forward to the most?" I picked Piranha Plant. Which makes me the FIRST person to pick Piranha Plant in this poll.)

Progress?

matt1993: (infinite-paragraph essay)
It took four days (more than that if you count the time I spent putting it off), but I'm finally done fixing one of my longest and most cringeworthy entries ever! :D

Now I just have 449 to go... I hope there aren't many more that are as long as that one. Off the top of my head I can already think of 18 more entries that are going to take a while to fix. :(

I'm glad most of my entries aren't that long... I couldn't bear the thought of it taking another 4×449=1,796 days to fix all my entries. By July 5, 2023 (1,796 days from now) everyone probably will have left both LJ and DW and moved to a third website, and all my work would be for nothing. And every webcomic I ever read would be gone by then. :(
matt1993: (afer ventus or the river sings backwards)
More archived Miiverse posts even though I somehow JUST NOW realized that maybe I should check archive.org to see if anything on Miiverse that I thought was lost forever (i.e. wasn't in the backup Nintendo emailed me) was accessible there, and as it turns out, there's a LOT that's still available that way! Including my own posts! And the comments on at least some of them! And my replies to other people's posts! Why didn't I think to try that until now??

I'm still going to make these Miiverse backup entries the same way I was going to (because who knows if they're ALL on archive.org, and even if they are, it'd be easier to find them in these entries, and I like getting to add commentary about some of them in retrospect), but...wow. I can still access so much content on Miiverse that I thought was gone forever! Maybe I'll go back later on and edit these entries to include not just how MANY comments I had on my Miiverse posts, but exactly what those comments were if I can find them!

(Note that this is nearly a year before they introduced stamps for certain games, and even after the stamp update there never were any stamps for NSMBU. I first made this on my computer in Paint by taking the sprite [from a Mario spritesheet I got from spriters-resource.com that had been saved on my computer ever since the days of PrtSc Land] and recoloring it to grayscale and resizing to 500%, then I replaced all the gray pixels with different patterns of black and white stripes. Then I recreated the whole thing pixel-by-pixel on Miiverse. I don't remember how long it took.

Also this is the first of the only two times I made [non-reply] Miiverse posts with no words in them!

And with sixteen Yeahs, I think it's safe to say that this post had the second-most Yeahs of any post I made, second only to the surprisingly popular "unlikely vine, likely vine" one.)

(At this point I was intending to make a post like this for every multiple of 250 Yeahs up to at least 1,000 - possibly up to 2,000 - then doing it every 500 or 1,000 Yeahs after that. But eventually I forgot about all of this and 250 Yeahs was the only milestone I ended up celebrating.

I don't know how many Yeahs I had by the time Miiverse shut down - I've said before that it was 1,788, but from archive.org it looks like that's actually how many Yeahs *I* gave to *other* people's posts. Now I'm hoping I didn't make the same incorrect assumption when I posted this...

If I counted right, all my posts before this one had a combined total of 307 Yeahs by the time Miiverse shut down. So a lot of those posts probably got more Yeahs even after this one was posted.

Right after this post, I went eight days in a row without posting to Miiverse [except MAYBE replies] - beating out my previous-longest hiatus by one day.)

I made thirteen posts on Miiverse on January 5, 2013 (though I've only put the first six in this entry). For nearly a year, that was the record of most Miiverse posts I made in a single day (if not counting replies since those weren't in the backup...) And no, I can't think of anything about that day that would make me post to Miiverse more often.

Before that, my record was nine posts each on December 29 and 30, 2012 (and thus, so far those are the only other two days that I turned into two-parters in this "backup my Miiverse posts on LJ and DW" series).

What do you think of these Miiverse backup entries so far? Should I post them more often? Less often? Include more Miiverse posts at a time? Less Miiverse posts at a time? I know probably not all of you are interested in these but I like having my Miiverse posts still existing on the Internet in some form. :)

WHY HAPPENING?

Sat, Nov. 4th, 2017 15:11
matt1993: (broken link)
So, I posted before when I found out in July that Photobucket made it so that users have to pay $400 a year for their images to show up anywhere other than Photobucket (and how it was disheartening since I WOULD have been able to see them if I hadn't been such a procrastinator for several years, and also couldn't fix them because I don't even use Photobucket and if I did I still couldn't fix anyone else's), but then I think I also posted when I found out that I could still see the images in Photobucket itself by opening the image in a new tab in Chrome.

Well, now I can't even do THAT anymore - the images are broken on Photobucket itself now! I'm not sure whether that's because I switched computers or whether it's because Photobucket somehow made their Terms of Service even WORSE, but one thing is for sure:

I SHOULD NEVER HAVE PUT OFF CHECKING MY FRIENDS PAGE OR ANY OF THE WEBCOMICS I USED TO READ BACK IN 2011-2013. Pretending I've gone back in time to finish all of that sooner is not going to cut it. Even if I also link to the DW version of the entry I just linked to.

I should've at least started catching up earlier than 2015... When I played Super Smash Bros. for 3DS for the first time, I played All-Star Mode, and hearing this soothing but slightly sad-sounding music in between rounds and seeing the years the characters debuted (especially when they were years I was around for, especially especially when it was as recent as 2001-2006 or 2007-2013) written on a wall in what looks like ancient ruins really gave me the feels the first time around and made me think about how long I'd been putting off the stuff I wanted to catch up on - why didn't I start my trip through memory lane THEN (besides the fact that I was still super excited to finally play that game)? If I had, I might actually be done by now!

I feel like the world (especially the Internet) is just becoming more and more destroyed by the minute... not only that, I've been feeling like I'VE let the world get destroyed by waiting all the way until 2015 to start catching up on everything I wanted to catch up on! I know that sounds silly, but it also sounds exactly like how I feel every time something else I could've seen years ago but didn't disappears. Which is ALWAYS.

Well, FINE!! If you can't beat the fact that half of the Internet looks like Comments on a Postcard fanstuff now, JOIN the fact that half of the Internet looks like Comments on a Postcard fanstuff now!

Over the past year or two, I've come across SOOOO many broken images, broken videos, no-longer-existent pages and websites, etc., that when I reread this LJ entry from 2010 (and also its mild-mannered alter ego, the DW counterpart), my first thought was "Oh great, ANOTHER broken video?... wait, no, that was just me hitting Enter several times to represent waiting a few seconds for someone to guess."

That's kind of funny, but it's also a testament to how so many things have in fact disappeared from the Internet in the last few years. :( But still kind of funny. :)

HA! I bet I tricked you into thinking there was a broken image/video in this entry just now! >:)

Okay, anxiety, I get why you think the entire Internet is going to be gone two years from now. You're probably right about that.

But WHY are you continuing to make me worry about everyone hating me for still liking/using/refusing to leave LJ? It's been nearly TWO MONTHS, and not one person has actually said "I hate you because you still like LJ", and I've actually met several new friends who are on LJ and not DreamWidth. So why are you still making me worry about it?! Anxiety, you're ruining my life!

(music tag should be: Snippets of Mario, Kid Icarus, SSB, BtVS, Enya, Dido, Céline Dion, Sarah McLachlan, Moya Brennan, Matchbox 20, Rascal Flatts, & Savage Garden music thrown together randomly in Audacity)

This has been kind of a disappointing April Fools' Day because:

1) Homestar Runner didn't update at all today, even though they did for April Fools' Day 2014, 2015, and 2016, and April Fools and Halloween are almost the only times they ever update nowadays.
2) I don't think many people noticed my April Fools prank at all.

For reference, my April Fools prank was this entry; however, when I first posted it (on March 31 in my time zone, but late enough that it was April 1 already for some of you), it was an exact copy of my first entry. Then I waited a few minutes or so and changed it to a copy of a different past entry in the same way... then changed it to another after a few more minutes, and so on - basically, if I was at my computer, I'd change the entry anywhere from once an hour to once every few minutes. (At first. I gradually updated it less and less often because it seemed like no one was noticing...)

By "exact copy", that means including the subject line, repost button, userpic, tags, mood, music, location... basically, everything except the timestamp, the comments, and friends-only status [though, of course, the only friends-only entries I used were ones that probably would've been fine being public]. And anything that I intended to change each time but accidentally forgot sometimes. Though if I used an entry I'd posted in [livejournal.com profile] _dreams_, [livejournal.com profile] autism, or [livejournal.com profile] asperger, I added a notice saying that it was cross-posted (even though I don't think copying a community entry to my own journal years later for April Fools' Day actually counts as cross-posting).

I chose the entries semi-randomly, sometimes by going to my Calendar for random years and months and picking a random entry I'd feel comfortable posting again, and sometimes by just putting in notable entries that I remember and wanted to include in this prank at some point. Some entries were used more than once.

And just to mess with your heads even more, I thought it might be fun to come up with a hypothetical FUTURE entry and add it into the mix! That's what the 2023 year in review is for. It ended up being my favorite thing about this prank, so I left that one up significantly longer than any other single entry.

Now that April Fools' Day is over, all the entries I ended up using are listed below for posterity. (Don't expect the repost buttons to work correctly, though...)

The entries that you could've sworn that you'd seen already and/or that they said something completely different a few minutes ago, in order of their first use in this prank )

I am sick and tired of people blaming 2016 for all the bad things that have happened this year.

Yes, I get that there were a lot of celebrity deaths this year, people got upset with each other over the election even more so than usual, etc. Those were definitely bad things that happened this year. But the Internet has taken this WAY too far - I'm getting tired of people blaming the year for it. (Dear 42 and It's Over 9000: I apologize. You are not the most annoyingly overused number-related memes in existence.) the way some people talk, it's like they think nothing good happened in 2016 (not true!) or that nothing bad happened in 2015 or any other recent year (also not true!). They make me feel like I'm not allowed to enjoy anything that was released in 2016. :(

Sorry for the rant - I just needed to get this off my chest before the end of the year. (Not that it'll make any difference - there's still people who complain about Super Mario Maker being released on September 11 last year...)

To anyone who happens to discover my journal while this is still on the first page: Rest assured, rants like this (or rants of any kind) are not very common in my journal. :)

Know-it-alls should be banned from living.

Your biggest pet peeve is gossip. Gossipers are vapid. They have nothing better to do than spread gossip about other people and stick their nose where it doesn’t belong. Can’t they just get a life?

Now for two quizzes I haven't taken before:

You Are FAIL

You love the internet, but it sometimes gets on your nerves.
How can so much of humanity be so stupid? Wait, you don't even want to know.

While there are some good aspects to being online, you can't help but notice there's so much fail.
You liked the internet so much more in the good old days... before all the idiots found out about it!

You Crave a Purposeful Life

Your dream is to live a life where you make a difference. You want to affect people.
You don't need to be the one who changes the world, but you would like to change a few lives.

You want to be generous and warm-hearted toward others. Life is hard enough as is.
You believe life is mostly about how you treat other people. What kind of person you are matters.

You know Super Smash Bros., right? That fighting game starring such iconic video game all-stars as Larry, Mario, Princess Twinkie, Yogi, Kong 1, Zelda, The Beautiful Woman Interviewing Me, Shamu, Pudgy Airplane, Donald Duck's Offspring, Wombat?, Crash Bandicoot, Yellow Man, Charlie Brown, King Arthur, Knights of the Crooked Sword, Pegasus Dude, The Princess of Something, Triangle-Nosed Boy, The Unknown Yoga Person, Kid With a Crazy Sword Thing, Garfield and Friends, Something the Hedgehog, a LEGO, Happy, and more? ;)

Yeah, apparently, at some point around the time the 3DS and Wii U versions were released, there was a trend of people on YouTube showing their relatives (or, in at least one case, random people) all the playable characters' artwork and asking them to try to guess their names.

These are all of the videos of this sort that I've found so far*, and most of them are just so funny that even if you have no interest in video games whatsoever, I recommend that you watch at least one! :D (I highly recommend not reading the comments on certain ones, though...)

Cut because I included 12 more, but they're great! )

*Except for one that's in Spanish and doesn't have enough subtitles for me to understand anything besides the characters' actual names. Also, eventually I found that there were so many that I decided to narrow it down by just watching ones that had at least a thousand views for now (though that was after I watched a couple that had less).

- I like Garfield
- I like Homestar Runner
- I like Enya
- And I've always loved the idea of wacky crossovers between ANY of my interests, whether it's in the form of a short-lived webcomic in 2006-2008, a short-lived backwards lyrics site in 2008, writing down weird dreams in 2009-2011, playing Tomodachi Life a lot in 2014-2016, or what most of my posts are about these days: playing around with Character.AI starting in 2023. I still can't believe I'm actually in a world where an AI of Enya can talk to AIs of Mario or Garfield or even my favorite obscure characters like Mary O. from Super Mario Maker. :O
