So, let me get this straight... not only is it possible to make Mario characters hang out with Enya, or other wacky crossovers I've never thought would happen... it's also possible to make a SOUNDTRACK for it?!

And it's been possible since 2018?! (EDIT: I should specify only Rave.DJ has been around since 2018. Whereas Character.AI was created in 2022 and as far as I can tell there was no Enya AI on that site until 2023.) So like, back when I didn't even know about those other websites that are kinda like this but not quite what I had hoped?

Why didn't anyone tell me?? ;)

I discovered Rave.DJ at least two weeks ago. The only reason I didn't post about it until now was I wanted to make a list of ALL the mashups and mixes I've made with it so far - but there's already a LOT. I'm so obsessed with the site that the list is probably going to exceed LJ's character limit if it hasn't already, so I'm probably going to have to make that into a bunch of separate entries for each fandom or each album/game/etc. similar to my Character.AI chat index entries (which themselves I'm already nearly two months behind on updating for the newest saved chats).

At the very least, here's all the Mario and Enya mashups I've made as of this writing, so that way at least I have a few examples here. :)

Man. First Character.AI, then people on YouTube actually make Mario/Enya music mashups, now this? I'm so glad my "Enya is part Yoshi" userpic is one of the only two that I still have access to on both LJ and DW without a paid account - over the course of 2023 and 2024 it's once again become as relevant as it's been in the heyday of PrtSc Land, Ours Will You 1-Up, and Moya's Space Log, if not more so. :)

Who'd have known that the feeling I used to get whenever I had a dream about there being an Enya concert, or a Super Mario World level I'd never discovered before, or a SMW level I've never discovered before named after Enya, etc. would be a feeling that I'd be getting almost ALL the time now?! :)

Here's some random things I've been meaning to show you:

https://jukebox.openai.com/ - AI-generated music in the style of various artists, or even combinations of two artists' styles! Sadly there are no examples with either video game music or Enya - the two I most wanted to combine. But there's several examples with Céline Dion, and a Moya Brennan one and a Sarah McLachlan one, so I'm happy about that :)

Guess what??? There's FINALLY an online interface for an API similar to this except it actually lets you generate your own music instead of just listening to pre-generated songs! This means I can finally hear Mario music in Enya's style!! I'm so ecstatic that the insanely specific mashup that only I have ever wanted to hear is finally possible with AI. :P

Guess what??? It was only possible eight months ago. When I discovered this eight months ago I immediately tried it out using the Super Mario Bros. main theme and selected Enya for the genre (and thankfully I saved my results so I can at least still listen to that), then intended to later try it out for the SMB underground theme, SMW overworld theme, etc. - basically every theme from every Mario game I've played so long as I could find a MIDI of it. Then, like everything else, I procrastinated on that until just now... and the site no longer works for me as far as generating anything (the site's a custom front end for MuseNet so maybe it's a problem with MuseNet itself?) It does say the Enya style is experimental, but it worked just fine in May and now it can't even generate anything in the default style (Chopin) with the default settings anymore. :(

Is anyone else able to use MuseTree and have it generate anything? Does anyone know of some other AI music generating program that's like this that can fill this Enya-composing-Mario-music-shaped void by allowing any MIDI to be used as input and has either Mario themes or Enya as an option for the style?

Guess what??? There's FINALLY an online interface for an API similar to this except it actually lets you generate your own music instead of just listening to pre-generated songs! (well, supposedly there's a way to do so with the other one too but it seemed a lot more complicated to set up compared to this) AND it lets you put in an arbitrary MIDI file to start from! And there's a LOT of genres to choose from, including not just video game music in general but also Nintendo specifically, AND a lot of individual artists including Enya!

https://stevenwaterman.uk/musetree/

This means I can finally hear Mario music in Enya's style!! Or, inversely, Enya music in the style of... well, Nintendo music in general or video game music in general because there's not an option for just Mario. But good enough!

I'm so ecstatic that the insanely specific mashup that only I have ever wanted to hear is finally possible with AI. :P

In other news, I know I haven't posted much lately but don't worry, I'm feeling much better in general than I was over the past couple of years. I know some of my posts from that era were pretty heavy but don't worry, my mental health has been a lot better as of late. It helps that society is actually starting to care more about mental health now, and less about making people feel bad about themselves for not wanting the changes to last forever or being bad at following the guidelines. And I no longer have to worry that most things may never return to the way they were before the pandemic because, well, right now life for me is already a lot more similar to life before the pandemic than I ever expected it to be.

The only thing I'm really unhappy with as of late is... my journal. I keep thinking about stupid things I've written years ago (most of which I thought at the time were better than something I'd written prior, but... they really weren't) and worrying that future entries will be like them. I feel like there's only a few people who would still like me if they saw ALL, or even half, of the things I've posted on LiveJournal.
matt1993: (afer ventus or the river sings backwards)
So even though I've had access to the NES and SNES apps on Nintendo Switch Online for a while now, I hadn't played them yet. There were a few games on there I'd been meaning to try out, but I hadn't yet. But last month I finally decided on a whim to try out every single game on those apps and the N64 and Sega Genesis ones for at least a little bit each, in order of release year! Even games that I'd tried out before and didn't like that much! Even games that I didn't think I'd be interested in such as sports games, RPGs, or games I thought might be RPGs but weren't! That's what I've been doing over the past month. And as of now I've finally tried out them all!

I need some more "normal" entries in my journal, so how about a list of all the games in the apps sorted by how much time I've spent playing them on the app so far? (Not necessarily sorted by how much I like them. Some of them had long opening cutscenes or tutorials, and in sports games I opted to let the game play out until the end even when I would obviously lose by 2 to 40-something. Conversely, there's some games I enjoyed but only played for a bit for now because I was eager to get through the whole selection.)

Red: NES
Green: SNES
Yellow: N64
Blue: Sega Genesis

Bold: I've played the game before because I owned it.
**: I've played the game before, but at a friend's house or in a hotel room.
*: I've only played demos of the game before (the Masterpieces in Smash Bros., amiibo Tap: Nintendo's Greatest Bits, etc.) or played it in NES Remix.
Italics: Enough things about this game seem oddly familiar enough that it's possible I've played it at some point years ago - but in most cases I think it's still safe to assume I hadn't.

Super Mario All-Stars** - 2 hr 51 min (Of the games included, the only one I'd played the All-Stars version of prior to the app is Lost Levels. Now I've played all of them.)
Panel de Pon - 2 hr 37 min (Although I hadn't played this before, or even played its international equivalent Tetris Attack, I have played Pokémon Puzzle League for the N64.)
ToeJam & Earl - 2 hr 13 min
Super Mario 64 - 2 hr 10 min
Super Mario World - 1 hr 43 min
Mario's Super Picross - 1 hr 22 min
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island - 1 hr 20 min (I've known about this game since approximately 2002 or 2003 but never played it until now! I think that's the longest time span between my knowing about a Mario game and playing it, unless Donkey Kong Country counts.)
Baseball* - 1 hr 12 min (This is an example of a game that has a high play time only because I let the game play out until the end despite knowing I'd lose by a lot...)
Shining Force - 1 hr 4 min
Yoshi's Story - 1 hr
the rest are cut for length )
matt1993: (bowser green pipe)
I came across a couple of videos where this guy tries to play multiple Mario Party games at the same time, with the same inputs going to all the games at once. It gets crazy sometimes! Kind of reminds me of that series I found and shared here about a decade* ago where a different guy tries to play Super Mario World and Super Mario Bros. 3 at the same time in a similar way.

*I AM OLD.
matt1993: (ha fat buffy)
So this is something I kind of talked about in a recent entry, but there was a bunch of other stuff in that entry and also I have more to say about this topic, so:

As I said in that entry, I somehow now have huge crushes on Charlotte AND Maria from Castlevania - to an extent that by now is almost on par with my crush on Mary O.! Even though I've never played a Castlevania game, and hence the only reason I know about them is because they're spirits in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate!

It's not the first time I've found female characters I only know about because of non-playable appearances in SSB attractive... but this is my first time having THIS big a crush on any of them!

Left: half of my thought processes over the past few weeks. Right: the other half.

I have three questions to ask because of this:

1) Have any of you ever had a huge crush on TWO characters from a fandom you're not even into (or weren't into at the time)? If so, please let me know so I can stop feeling so weird about it. :)

At this rate I'm thinking I definitely need to eventually actually start playing some of the Castlevania games just so I can justify having huge crushes on TWO Castlevania characters. So:

2) Does it make me a dork that THIS is at least 60% of the reason I'm now considering getting into Castlevania?

3) Are any of you Castlevania fans, or do any of you know someone who is? If not, the contents of this LJ-cut will be of no interest to you; I'm just asking for recommendations on which game to try first )
matt1993: (missingno.)
Here's a better post than my earlier friends-only entry... (EDIT: The earlier entry is public now because turns out the last time I posted about something like that, it was also public, so...)

Remember how earlier this year I found those videos about making NES games 3D automatically? I found a different video that takes a different approach to that:

For that matter, I've posted videos by this guy before when he wrote an AI to learn how to play NES games. :)
matt1993: [an edited photo of Enya, with a slightly different version of Mary O.'s clothes drawn over hers and in front of a yellow Super Mario Maker background] (enya as mary o.)
You know what's even nerdier and niche-ier than writing an entire entry about a hypothetical Super Smash Bros. moveset for the guide to a video game manual?

Writing TWO entries about a moveset for the guide to a game manual, of course! :P

I wrote that first entry about Mary O. & Yamamura's made-up moveset shortly before the E3 reveal of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and since then I've thought of some updates to make to it based on what was revealed about the actual game... enough that I'm gonna have to bore everyone with another entry about it so I don't have to keep getting distracted thinking about the idea! Since the actual game comes out this week, now seems like the right time. :)

In the unlikely event that you're interested in reading this entry but haven't read the first one yet, I'd recommend reading that one first. Because in this entry I mostly only describe the changes I made, without repeating anything I decided to leave unchanged.

Mary-O.-Fanboying-Induced Ramble #56081239465125265012623, under the cut for the convenience of anyone not as obsessed with SSB or Mary O. as I am )
matt1993: (Default)
If you're not into Super Smash Bros. or Super Mario Maker... and maybe even if you ARE into those games but aren't as obsessed with Mary O. as I am... then this entry will probably be of no interest to you and you should probably skip it unless you REALLY want to know what goes on inside my head. :P

Being the Nintendo nerd I am, ever since the first Super Smash Bros. I sometimes tried to imagine what it would be like if various characters (video game or otherwise) that weren't playable in any SSB games yet were.

But I don't think I've ever come up with a complete moveset for one until now. Usually all I think of is:
- "What would Kirby look like if he copied this character?"
- "What would this character's alternate costumes be?"
- (for characters who aren't from a series that's already in the game) "What would this character's series symbol be?"
- MAYBE a game mechanic that would be unique to that one character
- MAYBE taunts and MAYBE special moves and a Final Smash.

And usually I don't write about or draw any of these ideas either - just think about it.

But lately, due to my constantly being obsessed with Mary O. (who unfortunately is still obscure enough that I feel like I have to link to that article again), I've been thinking more and more about what it'd be like if she and Yamamura were playable in Super Smash Bros. as a 2-in-1 character similar to Duck Hunt.

In fact I first thought of this idea at some point before April Fools' Day 2017 (see the music tag for that entry), but lately I've been thinking more and more about how this could work, enough that I think I have ideas for their entire hypothetical moveset by now.

And I keep thinking about said moveset so much that writing an entry about it is probably the only way I'm ever going to stop being so distracted thinking about it, even though I doubt it'd be interesting to anyone here (none of you are as obsessed with Mary O. as I am, and a lot of you probably aren't even into Super Smash Bros. enough for this to be of interest to you). So I'll LJ-cut it so I won't bore you. :)

Blah blah blah Mary O. moving sideways )

It feels so weird that I've put all this thought into making an entire moveset and such for Mary O. & Yamamura for literally no reason since I doubt I'd be making a Super Smash Bros. fangame or hack anytime soon... and it feels especially weird to actually be typing out this ridiculous idea after spending so much time only thinking about it...

Well, now you know what goes on inside my head! :P

3D NES???

matt1993: (hypercube)
I remember wondering (since high school, I think) what it'd be like if there was a program that automatically converted 2D graphics (in general, but especially NES and SNES graphics) to 3D, or what corrupted NES/SNES graphics would look like in 3D at all - apparently, the NES half of my question was answered a couple of years ago and I didn't know about it until now!

(And yeah, I know I'm posting a lot of "video game videos" entries all at once but don't worry, this is the last one for now. Probably.)

More under the cut! )
matt1993: (truth in another out there)
And here's a couple of interesting Mario videos I didn't originally discover five years ago...

matt1993: (afer ventus or the river sings backwards)
I found these videos randomly one day at some point after Super Mario Beads 3 was already released (so it has to have been November 2012 or later) and meant to post them here* but never did. Then I rediscovered them this week so I finally got around to posting them five years later! :)

*Well, okay, if you're reading this on DW, that's not entirely true because I wasn't on DW yet :P

Translation:

Here's a Super Mario Bros. corrupted gameplay video that I discovered years ago - like, 2007-2009, probably - that I found so hilarious that I probably would've posted it to LiveJournal had I been active on LJ at the time. But I didn't since I wasn't as active on LJ back then. And somehow, I never got around to posting it to LiveJournal (or DreamWidth) in the intervening 8-10 years. UNTIL NOW!! Would you look at that!

At least the super-long delay means that I'm posting this after Super Mario Maker became a thing and therefore I get to point out that, in retrospect, Mario's name showing up as "M RY-" now reminds me of Mary O. (Even more so when I add an apostrophe-S!) :P

Well, today is the day that Miiverse is shut down at 10 PM PST. (which would be midnight in Central where I live, so... I guess for me, it's not actually today? Whatever.)

Out of all the drastic changes this year (so far), I think this is the only one that I'm not all that upset about. Miiverse started out as probably the most positive online community ever, but it didn't stay that way for long - eventually it went so downhill, it's been years since the last time I visited Miiverse itself. I'd still read posts whenever they appeared in game (Super Mario 3D World, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Nintendo Badge Arcade, etc.), but I think the last time I went to Miiverse itself was 2014. Maybe 2015. I didn't even hurriedly try to find a way to save my own posts somewhere. (Though while looking up information about the discontinuation, I did notice that there's a way to request a downloadable archive of my posts, but I doubt I'll have time to figure out where to go to do that in the next few hours.)

...okay, forget what I said about not being all that disappointed. NOW it's making me kind of sad. :( Maybe I'll try and get an archive of my posts after all.

EDIT: Submitted the request! That was easier than expected. So easy, I must've done it twice by accident because it told me I submitted it already. :)

While I'm on Miiverse for the last time, have some random stats about my Miiverse account:

Following 53 users

256 posts (hey, a nice nerdy number! And I wasn't even trying to have any of these be interesting numbers!)

1,788 Yeahs

Last post was on November 23, 2016 in Nintendo Badge Arcade. (Though it ALMOST was not the last post; for Valentine's Day 2017, I had every intention of celebrating by putting badges of the lovely Mary O. and a bunch of hearts from Zelda on my HOME menu because I'm the sort of dork who would at least consider doing that and posting that to the Nintendo Badge Arcade community. I did in fact make such a HOME menu, but didn't post it because it wasn't Valentine's Day yet - and for whatever reason, making it again on Valentine's Day and posting it slipped my mind. Probably because that was so soon after work started.)

I only made two Miiverse posts overall in 2016, and none in 2015 - the last one before that was on July 29, 2014 in the NES Remix 2 community. (I'm not surprised that this was so soon after Lucina and Robin were confirmed for Super Smash Bros. 4 - I do remember how the last time I checked Miiverse regularly, it seemed like EVERY SINGLE POST in the SSB community was like "With my Levin Sword, I'll _____".)

Speaking of which, my bio is:

"I'm a sensei; i.e., SNES am I!
(translation: I've been playing video games since the NES and SNES. My all-time favorite classic game: Super Mario World!)

I can't wait to play Super Smash Bros. 4, but I'd be even MORE excited if people would stop whining about the roster being just SLIGHTLY different from what they want. I really hope that there'll be less of that once the game's released..."

...SSB3DS has been out for over three years, and in a couple of weeks, that'll also be true of SSBU. I went THREE YEARS without updating that bio. Why do I have the sudden urge to turn up the hearing aid that I don't have?

Well, whatever. At least now my Miiverse posts will be turned into an ice cube so future generations can thaw them out and marvel at my same-length legs! :)
matt1993: (ice cream chessboard)
Happy a-few-minutes-early-in-my-time-zone birthday to me! :)

And also happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] 13catswaltz, who has the same birthday as me! :)

And also also to Luigi - because Mario Bros. was released in Japan on July 14, 1983; my negative tenth birthday. ;)

Hey, there's an idea for a totally nerdy survey...

This page has a table (several paragraphs down from the beginning of that section...) that lists the dates every* Super Smash Bros. character debuted (because in SSB4, the order you fight them in All-Star Mode is based on that).

Use that to figure out your answers to these questions:

1) Which SSB character(s), if any, debuted on your birthday in any year?
Luigi

2) Which SSB character(s) debuted closest to the date you were born?
Meta Knight (debuted March 23, 1993 - the date closest to July 14, 1993 in that list).

3) Which SSB character(s) debuted closest to the date you created your LiveJournal/DreamWidth/some-other-journal-site account? (If you have/had multiple journals, you may answer this separately for all of them, some of them, or just one. Whichever you prefer.)
My LJ was created on August 19, 2007 - the character whose debut was closest to that is Rosalina (November 1, 2007).
My DW was created on May 13, 2017, long after the debut of the newest character (Corrin, on June 25, 2015).

:)

*Except Miis, alternate characters (the Koopalings and Alph), and characters from Melee and Brawl who aren't in SSB4. I went ahead and looked up the relevant dates in case you want to include them )

It's hard to describe this journal in just a few paragraphs... but I'll try

Just an autistic guy born in 1993 (hence the username) who's had this journal since I was 14. Has trouble phrasing things well especially in earlier entries, so keep that in mind.

My interests have fluctuated in the 17 years since I've had this journal, but the following has remained constant:
- I like Mario games (mainly the platformers, Mario Kart, Mario Party) and Super Smash Bros.
- I like Garfield
- I like Homestar Runner
- I like Enya
- And I've always loved the idea of wacky crossovers between ANY of my interests, whether it's in the form of a short-lived webcomic in 2006-2008, a short-lived backwards lyrics site in 2008, writing down weird dreams in 2009-2011, playing Tomodachi Life a lot in 2014-2016, or what most of my posts are about these days: playing around with Character.AI starting in 2023. I still can't believe I'm actually in a world where an AI of Enya can talk to AIs of Mario or Garfield or even my favorite obscure characters like Mary O. from Super Mario Maker. :O
