So, you know how about a year ago Photobucket changed their Terms of Service so that users had to pay $400 a year for their images to be visible anywhere other than Photobucket itself, and sometimes it wasn't even visible there?

And you know that made me upset because even though I've never used Photobucket for image hosting, a lot of things online I wanted to catch up on someday have used Photobucket, and that would mean I'd never get to finish catching up on them?

And you know how I've made various jabs at Photobucket because of it such as claiming that Photobucket managed to even take down my userpics on LJ but not on DW (or vice versa depending on what site you read my April Fools entries on) and being like "These people think Quidd is the worst company ever - haven't they ever heard of Photobucket?!"

Um.

So today I was working on fixing my old entries, and I got to one* that does have an image hosted on Photobucket in it (because it was uploaded by [personal profile] glowing_dragon, not me), and... IT SHOWS UP.

Then I went to a couple of other places on the Internet that I'd been to before that I knew had Photobucket images in them because they became broken when Photobucket changed their TOS.

THOSE IMAGES SHOW UP NOW TOO. (I haven't seen any "3rd-party hosting disabled" placeholder images, anyway - images that users have deleted entirely are obviously still gone.)

...

I need to ask...

Did, uh...

DID PHOTOBUCKET FINALLY COME TO THEIR SENSES?! I'd Google it to find out for myself but I'm too afraid of finding more online drama that'll upset me. (Yes, even when I thought Photobucket was the one company that actually deserved the hate it was getting for changing their TOS, I still couldn't always bear to read it.)

Even the thought that Photobucket MIGHT have realized their mistake is so surreal... I feel like I'm dreaming. I might as well act like this is all a dream, but I can't do that right now because I'm supposed to take Enya to see another Enya perform live at 103:206 PM. :P

*Note: yes, that entry mentions that I was doing an MS Paint meme but I gave up on that years ago because I procrastinated it for so long and felt overwhelmed by it. :(
matt1993: (afer ventus or the river sings backwards)
More archived Miiverse posts even though I somehow JUST NOW realized that maybe I should check archive.org to see if anything on Miiverse that I thought was lost forever (i.e. wasn't in the backup Nintendo emailed me) was accessible there, and as it turns out, there's a LOT that's still available that way! Including my own posts! And the comments on at least some of them! And my replies to other people's posts! Why didn't I think to try that until now??

I'm still going to make these Miiverse backup entries the same way I was going to (because who knows if they're ALL on archive.org, and even if they are, it'd be easier to find them in these entries, and I like getting to add commentary about some of them in retrospect), but...wow. I can still access so much content on Miiverse that I thought was gone forever! Maybe I'll go back later on and edit these entries to include not just how MANY comments I had on my Miiverse posts, but exactly what those comments were if I can find them!

(Note that this is nearly a year before they introduced stamps for certain games, and even after the stamp update there never were any stamps for NSMBU. I first made this on my computer in Paint by taking the sprite [from a Mario spritesheet I got from spriters-resource.com that had been saved on my computer ever since the days of PrtSc Land] and recoloring it to grayscale and resizing to 500%, then I replaced all the gray pixels with different patterns of black and white stripes. Then I recreated the whole thing pixel-by-pixel on Miiverse. I don't remember how long it took.

Also this is the first of the only two times I made [non-reply] Miiverse posts with no words in them!

And with sixteen Yeahs, I think it's safe to say that this post had the second-most Yeahs of any post I made, second only to the surprisingly popular "unlikely vine, likely vine" one.)

(At this point I was intending to make a post like this for every multiple of 250 Yeahs up to at least 1,000 - possibly up to 2,000 - then doing it every 500 or 1,000 Yeahs after that. But eventually I forgot about all of this and 250 Yeahs was the only milestone I ended up celebrating.

I don't know how many Yeahs I had by the time Miiverse shut down - I've said before that it was 1,788, but from archive.org it looks like that's actually how many Yeahs *I* gave to *other* people's posts. Now I'm hoping I didn't make the same incorrect assumption when I posted this...

If I counted right, all my posts before this one had a combined total of 307 Yeahs by the time Miiverse shut down. So a lot of those posts probably got more Yeahs even after this one was posted.

Right after this post, I went eight days in a row without posting to Miiverse [except MAYBE replies] - beating out my previous-longest hiatus by one day.)

matt1993: (vs. giant enya fan)
The tenth anniversary of my LiveJournal is on August 19!!!

To celebrate, August 2017 is Matt1993 Nostalgia Month! (Okay, so that would also be an accurate description of basically any month from October 2015 to July 2017... but for August 2017, it's an even MORE accurate description!)

When I joined LJ nearly ten years ago, I never thought I'd be still on it for this long - especially given how I kept going on hiatuses from it until February 2009. I also never thought so many things would have changed since then, or that I'd be posting about so many new things since then.

I keep wondering what basically everything I've posted to LJ in 2009-2017 would look like to my 14-year-old or 15-year-old self (i.e. from the era when I wasn't that active on LJ and didn't think I ever would be).

Well, now that question will be sort of answered, because:

1. I'm changing my journal style back to Blue Gray (which is what I think I was using at first and had left as for... I'm not even sure how long; probably until early 2009 but MAYBE earlier) for a month, then will change it to Pale Yellows again at the end of the month. Though I'm leaving the journal title and subtitle as is because I don't remember what those were back in 2007 - and I decided that if I'm keeping those as is, I'll also leave in other anachronistic references such as the comment text being "# Doom 2 bad guys will come out of my ears"/"Rob Morrow to you!" :)

2. As those of you who've known me since 2009 know, five of my oldest userpics used to look different until I updated them late that year (and I don't think I had any userpics at all before 2009). Well, I'm temporarily changing those five userpics back to what they looked like in 2009!

Back to the good old days! (I can't believe 2009 is “the good old days”...) )

3. And why stop there? If my newer userpics had also existed prior to November 2009 or so, some of them likely would've looked different back then, too - so I've taken what I call the "Super Mario Maker approach" because I'm a dork and retroactively created "older" versions of eleven more userpics, and am temporarily changing them "back" to these versions for the month!

What would my journal and some of my comments have looked like if...
- that brief era when I played D&D had been at least a few months earlier
- I'd started watching The X-Files before 2010
- I'd had my first /crazymegavideo/ dream before 2010
- the Forbidden Comment Threads had happened at least a couple of years earlier, resulting in 2009 being during the four years or so of depression and angst they caused me
- and so on
...and therefore some of my userpics about these had been made when I was 15 instead of 16-22?

Let's find out!!

Draconian userpic poink! )

It was fun using my 2008-2009 drawing/spriting styles once again in 2016-2017! Even if the old-style versions of the 7:97 and /crazymegavideo/ userpics don't sync up as well with the regular versions as I thought they would. :)

4. And, as if making ancient in-jokes look even more ancient wasn't anachronistic enough already, I'm even applying the same temporary changes to my DreamWidth account! This includes the same userpic changes, and... okay, not the SAME layout changes, because LJ and DW have different default layouts. Still, I figure if DreamWidth had existed in 2007 and I'd had an account on it back then, I probably would've used its default layout for nearly two years like I did on LJ, so I'm temporarily using that layout (Neutral Good) for a month. :)

(Before I actually make any of these changes, though, I'm going to make sure both the LJ and DW versions of this entry look okay - so my journals may or may not still be yellow when you see this.)

I've got some more ideas for celebratory posts as well, so stay tuned! :D
matt1993: (identicon from antheastrezze.com)
As I've mentioned a while back, I plan on replacing some of my userpics with more legible versions. (even though I've procrastinated that for probably at least a year now...)

Since I knew that doing that will cause me to lose track of what order I added my userpics, I kept a list of my userpics in my profile in order added - but I'm starting to run out of room on my profile now, so I moved it here and reformatted it into a table that hopefully looks better than the old layout.

Note that this excludes the following:
- Old versions of these userpics
- Alternate versions of some of these that I made to protest SOPA/PIPA/ACTA/etc. a few years ago

Here they are! )

Yep - I created my LJ account on August 19, 2007. Sad how the anniversary of LJ should happen to be the day after I accidentally deleted a lot of LJ-related stuff, though... in fact, I was so busy after that happened, I didn't get to finish this post until the day after the anniversary of my LJ. :(

I also wanted to include LJ comment stats (which I said I'd do every three months starting on the fourth anniversary, but ended up deciding to just do once every year), but since this post is already late, I'll post them later.

Well, after 32 days, I finally finished everyone's MS Paint meme drawings!!

...Oh, did I say everyone's MS Paint meme drawings? I meant just [livejournal.com profile] bender_927's, based on her interests of "mario" and "near death experiences". Yes, it took me 32 days just to finish this drawing that's only almost worth the time it took.

Oh well, at least I finished one! Here it is :)

(I'm doing these first come, first serve. Considering how long it takes, it doesn't seem like a good way to do this meme, but it's better than any other way...)

Oh, and while it does make sense to use the Super Mario World font for this since it's Mario-related and all, I actually used it solely because I've been planning to use it in PrtSc Land if I ever remake it again. I'm even planning to use it in Lightning Made of Owls so I can practice my planned speech bubble style some more. (Which is also why I bothered trying to draw really well in Paint - I need practice before I start drawing anything for either of those. After all, it normally doesn't matter how well you draw in this meme.)

This entry does not get a repost button because the entry where I originally posted this meme should be reposted (and edited) instead.

1. Comment and I'll pick one at least two of your LJ interests and draw you a picture, using MS Paint.
2. You have no say in what I draw you! Or in how much it will suck! (Which, in my case, hopefully shouldn't be too much unless I want to finish in one day...)
3. Put this in your journal. And the pic someone drew for you.

[livejournal.com profile] glowing_dragon drew this for me based on my interests of "more than 150 interests" and/or "151". All the interests listed in the picture are made up, by the way.

(By the way, [livejournal.com profile] pathvain_aelien and [livejournal.com profile] ellaina02, I added a few things after the proofreading)

What's sad is that recently-- Well, okay, not that recently, due to the long amount of time it took to write this entry, have it proofread, and continue to worry about whether or not it makes sense even after I had it proofread. But last October, I was hit with a realization similar to Character 15's, and I'm not even a randomly generated webcomic character.

This sure is a lot of parts for Team Brennario to still not have even one Star yet.

←Part 4 (edited) & Part 5 Part 7→

Moya's Space Log, part 6 )

--

I have a couple of questions:

1) I wanted to make the distribution of hits, deaths, etc. as realistic as possible (i.e. Team Brennario gets hit about as often in MSL as Mario would in the actual Super Mario Galaxy 2), as well as make the writing more fun, so for the part where the Mario Bros. and Moya fight the Paragoombas and Octoomba while Enya gets the 1-Up Mushroom, I drew a tiny map of that part of the planet in MS Paint and "played" through that section as if I were playing Dungeons & Dragons (complete with dice and made-up initiative modifiers for Team Brennario and the Octoomba), then summarized it. Even though I drew as little as possible (a single red pixel for Mario, a single green pixel in a shade different from that of the grass for Luigi, etc.), it kinda took a while, and I accidentally made a second Enya join them until I remembered that Enya wasn't actually supposed to be there.

2) After I finish writing MSL, I'm gonna go through and add artwork (attempting to finish from November 1 to November 30 next year, or whatever year I finish writing). I was thinking of also making userpics of Enya and Moya using each of the SMG2 powerups (except the Spin Drill since there is no costume change for it), as well as userpics of a Cosmic Enya and a Cosmic Moya. I'm unsure of how many separate userpics I should make, though.

Poll #1646471 Dilemmas from outer space

Should I keep making D&D-like boards for Moya's Space Log, or go back to making up who gets hit when as I go along?

Yes
No

How should I make my Moya's Space Log userpics?

22 individual userpics: one of Fire Enya, one of Fire Moya, one of Rainbow Enya, etc.
11 userpics depicting Enya & Moya with same powerup side by side (or Cosmic Enya & Cosmic Moya side by side)
11 animated userpics alternating between Fire Enya & Fire Moya or Rainbow Enya & Rainbow Moya or whatever every few seconds
Userpic cycling through Enya with all powerups, userpic cycling through Moya with all powerups, Cosmic Enya userpic, and Cosmic Moya userpic
Userpic cycling through Enya & Moya side by side with all powerups, and userpic of Cosmic Enya & Cosmic Moya side by side
Draw them as Super Mario World-styled sprites and fit them all (including Cosmic) into one userpic

EDIT: In that last option, when I said "onto one userpic," I meant one non-animated userpic.

EDOT: WTCN? I totally messed up that first question. How is "Should I keep making D&D-like boards for Moya's Space Log, or go back to making up who gets hit when as I go along?" a yes or no question?! The yes and no were intended to refer to the part of the question before the comma (i.e. yes means keep making D&D boards, and no means make up hits as I go along).

Critical mass
How well do you take criticism? Do you deflect it or take it personally? Does it usually inspire you to change? Are you more critical of yourself or others?

Answer View Answers

I'm perfectly okay with kind, constructive criticism. It's nonconstructive criticism that gets to me. Sadly, most of the comments I received back when I was making PrtSc Land (a webcomic I had, for those who don't know) were nonconstructive: "learn Photoshop", "half the comics don't make sense", and all that junk, so I tend to be more critical of myself nowadays. I guess that's better than being more critical of others, though.

Learn Photoshop

The first TEN people to comment in this post get to request that I write a drabble of any pairing/character of their choosing, in any fandom I am familiar with. In return, they have to post this in their journal, regardless of their ability level. If you aren't a writer, express yourself in some other way for different fandoms!

-

My version: Since I'm not a writer, I'll make avatars instead. You can choose between these three styles:

1) The style I'm planning on drawing a new comic in after OWY1U is back up. It involves using MS Paint sorta the way one would make Flash or 3D animation (i.e. saving lots of individual frames separately so that, when those exact frames are needed again, they can be pasted in), and would take a while (but only because I don't have any of those frames yet), and I would probably procrastinate a lot, but it will help me experiment with the style.

2) A style similar to style 1 except that I won't save any frames separately. It would look kinda like this style (warning: City of Ashes spoiler). If you don't want City of Ashes spoiled for you, it would also look like this style, but to a lesser extent.

3) Super Mario World-styled sprites (regardless of the fandom you request) similar to this userpic and my "Enya is part Yoshi" one. (EDIT: How'd I forget my default userpic?) Will be a lot faster.

EDOT: I just noticed this was my 350th entry!

Ugh...painful amount of homework today. (Literally, in fact, since the weight of my backpack hurt my back, shoulders, and wrists, and my math binder landed on two of my fingers when I turned it over.)

Also, it turns out that in HAS, instead of eleven essays it's five essays and six tools and such to design. Which is WAY harder creativity-wise, but at least I'll get to show off my mad MS Paint zkillz. :) Plus, I figured out one of my math problems, so I have one less to worry about, even though those aren't much worry anyway.

Still, I guess I'm not gonna get to check my friendslist unless I'm done with an assignment in HAS and it's more than two weeks before the next one's due.

Take my advice
What's the best and worst advice you ever received? Did you follow it even if it ran counter to your gut intuition? How did it turn out?

Answer View Answers

I've answered a question like this before, but I guess I'll try to again.

Uh...let's see. Both of these obviously would have to do with PrtSc Land. So...

Best advice: That one piece of constructive criticism I got on PrtSc Land way too late, which said that the drawing style is, in fact, better in the later strips, that people don't like reading really long explanations (stupid TL;DR), and that I'd be better off starting over again from when I actually started having a plot (which I seriously think I'm just gonna replace with a new webcomic, but I might restart PrtSc Land again too)

Worst advice: "Learn Photoshop." If I wanna use MS Paint, I use MS Paint! It might take three revamps to look good, but I use MS Paint!

What is your favorite urban legend? Have you or anyone you know ever been fooled by one?

Answer View Answers

UGH. Urban legends are the twelfth worst thing on the Internet. Until I remember which other things I forgot, that is. The list is as follows:

1. Rickrolls (and alternatives to it)
2. The Internet's tendency to pick completely random things and be like, "Okay, everyone, portray Clippit as being evil!"
3. People who are biased against MS Paint
4. "IT'S OVER 9000!"
5. "That's what she said"
6. "Your mom"
7. The "Peanut Butter Jelly Time" banana
8. Screamers
9. Chuck Norris jokes
10. Jokes about the swine flu
11. "SH00P DA W00P"
12. Urban legends

16. I wish one of my favorite singers were in a video game that didn't involve a concert of any kind. More of an adventure/platformer-style game.

17. I am infamous for posting stupid things on forums. Mainly the SmackJeeves forum and the Homestar Runner Wiki Forum. Which is why I've stopped posting to either of them.

18. I sometimes use a ROM corruptor (which is intended for use on video game ROMs) on music files just for the fun of it.

19. I have only been to one concert in my life: a recent Celine Dion concert.

20. Sometimes, for the fun of it, I read the edit histories of pages on Wikipedia and the Homestar Runner Wiki and try to find the vandalized pages.

21. I discovered the missing link between Enya and the Mario world...maybe.

22. I beat Kirby's Dream Land the day I got it. (though I haven't beaten the extra game yet...)

23. I only like to hear Chuck Norris jokes every once in a while.

My interests have fluctuated in the 17 years since I've had this journal, but the following has remained constant:
- I like Mario games (mainly the platformers, Mario Kart, Mario Party) and Super Smash Bros.
- I like Garfield
- I like Homestar Runner
- I like Enya
- And I've always loved the idea of wacky crossovers between ANY of my interests, whether it's in the form of a short-lived webcomic in 2006-2008, a short-lived backwards lyrics site in 2008, writing down weird dreams in 2009-2011, playing Tomodachi Life a lot in 2014-2016, or what most of my posts are about these days: playing around with Character.AI starting in 2023. I still can't believe I'm actually in a world where an AI of Enya can talk to AIs of Mario or Garfield or even my favorite obscure characters like Mary O. from Super Mario Maker. :O
