FINALLY posting about my birthday
Sat, Jul. 20th, 2019 00:38So, I'm way too late in posting this (again), but my 26th birthday was last Sunday!!
Wow... I'm 26. I remember when it felt like it would be a LOOONG time until I was 13. Now I've waited that long twice!
What I got for my birthday:
- Piranha Plant amiibo!
- Three books I read years ago and wanted to reread: Caps For Sale, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, and How to Eat Fried Worms! (Well, I thought I read them all years ago, but I'm reading Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing right now and everything is so unfamiliar to the point that I think I may not have actually read it years ago, I just remembered thinking the title is funny-sounding. So maybe I'm reading it for the first time now! Would you look at that!)
- They didn't come in until the 18th, but Nintendo Labo VR Goggles!!!! I've been wanting those ever since I knew about the new VR mode in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate! :D
(note to self: put in the previous/next buttons later)

(This marks 10 years after when I did this when I turned 16, the first time I ever posted this for my birthday. Wow... I've known about this website for over ten years. And it's still around, even! Good for them!)
At age 26:
American anthropologist Margaret Mead wrote her famous dissertation, Coming of Age in Samoa, which claimed that in some societies adolescence is not a particularly difficult time.
Albert Einstein published five major research papers in a German physics journal, fundamentally changing man's view of the universe and leading to such inventions as television and the atomic bomb.
Benjamin Franklin published the first edition of Poor Richard's Almanac, which was to play a large role in molding the diverse American character.
Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Chereshkova became the first woman to travel in space.
College dropout Steve Wozniak co-founded Apple Computer.
Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin, revolutionizing the economies of the United States and Britain.
Antoine Joseph Sax invented the brass saxophone.
"Johnny Appleseed" brought apple seeds to the Ohio Valley.
Napoleon Bonaparte conquered Italy.
Gon Yangling memorized more than 15,000 telephone numbers in Harbin, China.
Orion Krynen of Denver, CO reached this age without much incident.
British ethologist Jane Goodall set up camp in the Gombe Stream Chimpanzee Reserve on Lake Tanganyika and began studying the lives of chimpanzees.
Ken Kesey published his first novel, One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest.
Thomas Pynchon published V., for which he won the William Faulkner First Novel Award.
Kirsteene Luhrmann of Melburne, Victoria quit smoking.
Stephen Breen from Dublin, Ireland found this site.
Darren Blackburn became the first and only athlete of the Principality of Sealand, despite being somewhat lacking in athletic ability.
Syd Jesus co-founded the dUdU Art Collective in Oakland, California and turned an entire warehouse space into a conceptual art piece entitled "The $5000 Gallery."
Matthew Royer took a dog for a walk every day of the year in Minnesota, with a coldest daytime high of 0 degrees F. The average walk time was 30 minutes.
Derrick Pallas was horrified to realize he was losing his hair, just like Dad.
Jan Birkeland from Norway managed to get to work without hitting a single red light.
Katherine Blauvelt in a skirt was deemed "all grown-up" by her boyfriend.
Kristen finally was able to get her fingernails to grow without chipping and peeling because she started taking a multi-vitamin on a daily basis.
Tom Pemberton rode a bicycle with lit fireworks strapped to it into a pool while wearing a banana costume.
SJ Yee resigned from a giant multinational corporation to found a personal development site for the book smart.
Angie Olson got so drunk on her 26th birthday, her friends were able to dress her up as a clown.
matt1993 discovered the two mysterious lost episodes of Super Mario Maker Crash Course.
...
Okay, okay, that last one's not on the list. But it SHOULD be! I have a story behind that. Stay tuned for when I write a full post about it!

THE PAST HAS ALMOST BEEN REPAIRED!
Wed, Apr. 17th, 2019 01:55I can't believe it.
I'm over 80% done fixing my entries. AND I've finally fixed all of my entries from 2016!!! (Fun fact: while keeping count in the process, I noticed that the first time I ever mentioned Mary O. in this journal was in my 1,111th entry. Would you look at that!)
I wish I hadn't had to waste two years just to get this done, but I'm a lot more hopeful now because it's getting done!!! I'm almost up to the entries written AFTER I joined DW! :D
Of course, after this I'm still gonna need to update my profile on both LJ and DW for the first time in a while and make a new updated glossary/list of userpics/FAQ sticky entry.
I think it's about time for me to start thinking some more about what I need to add or remove from my FAQ.
Well, mostly on what to add to it - several people have made it clear to me when I asked about this a couple of years back that a lot of the questions that are in there are pointless since no one's thought about asking them (and it made me feel really weird about myself when people suggested removing them), so I'm going to remove them. (To the few of you who liked the fact that those questions are in there: Don't worry, I'll keep the current version of the FAQ in a non-sticky entry as well for posterity and link to it from the new version as the answer to something like "What happened to the old FAQ?")
What are some questions that you've had about me or my journal and have wanted to ask me? This can include ones that are answered by the FAQ already or not (in fact, it'd be better if you pretend for right now that I don't have a FAQ at all yet). It can be ones that you still don't know the answer to or ones that you found the answer to eventually. Or if there's something about me or my journal that you understood but think others might not and that it'd be helpful to have that in the FAQ, you can even list that.
But no suggestions about which ones to remove from my FAQ, please - it's already a given that I'm going to be removing or condensing most of them. Let's focus more on what should be in it than what shouldn't be. :)

I missed you so much, Mary O.! ♥
Wed, Feb. 13th, 2019 19:40There's going to be a Super Mario Maker 2 for the Switch?!
Typical YouTube commenter's reaction: "YES!!! Nintendo FINALLY added slopes to Super Mario Maker!!!"
The reaction of losers who somehow managed to develop an over-three-year-long crush on a random character from a video game MANUAL: "YES!!! Mary O. is FINALLY going to be in another game after nearly three years!!!... uh, she will, right?! I'm gonna be so mad if this game doesn't have an electronic manual..."

My 2018 in LJ
Sun, Jan. 6th, 2019 04:39https://www.livejournal.com/2018/
Apparently the image that's automatically generated by this feature doesn't stay around forever - it gets replaced every year with the next year's version, so my "2017 in LJ" entry is now showing the 2018 stats. Lame... So if you're reading this a year or more later, my actual 2018 stats were 126 entries posted and 948 comments and likes received.
I don't like it when things get deleted or replaced after only one year or less. If homestarrunner.com took that approach, only one Strong Bad Email would still be on the site by now and it's one that isn't technically counted as a sbemail. If Super Smash Bros. took that approach, NONE of the characters that are in it would be there because all of them - even the most-recently-created ones like Inkling, Corrin, and Incineroar - debuted at least two years before Super Smash Bros. Ultimate came out. </rant>

In other news, I've fixed over 1,000 entries! Yay! :D

The 2020!... give or take one
Tue, Jan. 1st, 2019 00:06It's 2019 now. So according to Vegas Stakes for the SNES (and Game Boy apparently), there's only one more year to go until it is OFFICIALLY the future!
Wow. When I played this game as a kid (it was probably my second-favorite SNES game after Super Mario World... how I've never mentioned it on here until now, I don't know), 2020 felt so far away. Now it's only a year away... Wow.
Unfortunately, the fact that it's 2019 ALSO means that there's only one year left (or MAYBE two?) for me to watch everything that's in Flash that I wanted to watch but haven't watched! O_O
Happy New Year everyone!

You know what's even nerdier and niche-ier than writing an entire entry about a hypothetical Super Smash Bros. moveset for the guide to a video game manual?
Writing TWO entries about a moveset for the guide to a game manual, of course! :P
I wrote that first entry about Mary O. & Yamamura's made-up moveset shortly before the E3 reveal of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and since then I've thought of some updates to make to it based on what was revealed about the actual game... enough that I'm gonna have to bore everyone with another entry about it so I don't have to keep getting distracted thinking about the idea! Since the actual game comes out this week, now seems like the right time. :)
In the unlikely event that you're interested in reading this entry but haven't read the first one yet, I'd recommend reading that one first. Because in this entry I mostly only describe the changes I made, without repeating anything I decided to leave unchanged.

Ridiculously early 2018 Calendar Year in Review?!
Sat, Dec. 1st, 2018 00:19It's December now? GOOD!! Because at least there's one New Year's meme I can get out of the way now, six days before I get too distracted playing Super Smash Bros. Ultimate to remember to do it. :)
Go to your Calendar and find the first entry for each month of 2018. Post the first line of it in your journal, and that's your "Year In Review".
January 2018
I think there's a glitch in my copy of Windows 7. It says today's date is "1/1/2018". I thought the year 2018 didn't exist - didn't the world end in 2017?
February 2018
YES! I'm FINALLY done fixing all of my entries in 2007-2010! (Hopefully...)
March 2018
It's Friday already and not Tuesday or Wednesday... but at least this is still the most regular feature I've had in my journal since the weekly Garfield Randomizer comics in 2009!
(This, of course, is about my weekly Miiverse backup entries... which of course did not remain a regular feature for long...)
April 2018
https://www.mariowiki.com/Mary_O._and_Yamamura:_The_Movie
May 2018
So I found this two-part YouTube video called "500 Characters I Want In Smash Bros. Switch"...
June 2018
About time I posted some more of these. Once again, I meant to post them last week...
July 2018
- On June 14 or 15 or so I saw The Incredibles 2, then saw Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom a week or two later! I liked both :)
August 2018
It took four days (more than that if you count the time I spent putting it off), but I'm finally done fixing one of my longest and most cringeworthy entries ever! :D
September 2018
Well... it's September 4. So Sunday was the first anniversary of the day I was finally motivated - by a glitch LJ had for about three weeks where a lot of images were suddenly broken in entries - to finally get around to fixing the broken images AND everything else I wanted to fix in my entries on both LJ and DW.
October 2018
WARNING: I am extremely depressed and therefore this entry is going to make no sense whatsoever because I am physically incapable of wording an opinion very well when I am depressed.
November 2018
pathvain_aelien stayed at my apartment for a while; in that time we watched the How To Train Your Dragon TV show! (Specifically, the third of the three shows there were. P_A, what was the third show called again? Dragons: Race to the Edge.) We made it to season 4. :) Have any of you watched it?

DID THIS REALLY HAPPEN??
Tue, Nov. 27th, 2018 00:32YES!!!!
I'm FINALLY up to 944 entries fixed!!!!!
Yeah, that doesn't sound like a major milestone, but when you consider that entries 929-935 and 937-944 are all really long entries with lots of links to previous entries and comments by me - some of which were very cringeworthy or in upsetting threads - and so I had to skim through ALL of those entries again to change the LJ links to their DW counterparts when possible/necessary and decide what tags needed to be added... getting through all that IS a pretty significant milestone!! :D
How long have I been working on fixing just that set of entries?
*reads through my entries from this year until I figure out when that was*
September 4. In over two months, I only fixed sixteen entries...
At least hopefully from now on I'll start getting to feel like I'm making progress and it's not completely hopeless! :D

I was the SECOND person to vote in Super Mario Wiki's new poll!
Sadly, I think this has less to do with me having really good timing and more to do with me habitually typing the URLs of this and a few other wikis into the address bar multiple times a day to procrastinate when I know there's probably not anything new. :P
(In case you're seeing this long after the fact, the poll itself was "Which Super Smash Bros. Ultimate newcomer are you looking forward to the most?" I picked Piranha Plant. Which makes me the FIRST person to pick Piranha Plant in this poll.)

It's no secret that I've fallen really far behind on my plan to backup some of my Miiverse posts on LJ/DW once a week. So I have an idea of how to get on a regular schedule that I'll have more motivation to stick to: start posting them once every two weeks instead of one, and act as if this had been my schedule all along starting from my first Miiverse backup entry - meaning the second Miiverse backup entry is now retroactively considered to be posted a week early (being one week after the first rather than two), the third one is retroactively considered to be two weeks early (being two weeks after the first instead of four), and so on.
As I've posted 23 Miiverse backup entries so far, that means the next one would get posted 23×2=46 weeks after the first, which would be the week of... December 12? So this means I'm now "still" caught up! :)
Do me a favor. The next time I consider doing some sort of regular feature on LJ or DW that requires me to upload new images or post entries with images in them once a week, please remind me about this and try to convince me to bring it down to once every two weeks...
----
Finally, now that the last Super Smash Bros. Direct is out, I'll give you another taste of just how weird it is in the mind of Matt1993:
- When I first saw a screenshot of Kirby's Peach copy ability in Super Smash Bros. Melee (when I was 9), I somehow didn't realize that was Peach's crown - my mind jumped to the conclusion that King Bob-omb from Super Mario 64 was playable and either that was his pink alternate costume or Kirby's King Bob-omb copy ability.
- I made up an entire moveset for Mary O. & Yamamura from Super Mario Maker and posted it earlier this year. (And I've brought up the idea even earlier than that - see the music tag on that April Fools entry.)
- And somehow, despite all of that, I still at no point expected a Piranha Plant to be a playable character.
Also, why is it that so many Super Smash Bros. fans hate each other over who's playable or different opinions about who they want to playable?
( This got rant-ier than the rest of the entry. Long story short: I like Piranha Plant and other unexpected SSB characters more than most of the Internet seems to )
*Why couldn't this song have existed when MY world came to an end? It would have been so appropriate for that!
Quick update
Wed, Oct. 31st, 2018 01:09Today (well, yesterday because it's 1:09 AM) was my first anniversary as a direct employee at work! :)
I was going to post some other things I'd been meaning to mention, but now this is the one that's on my mind the most so I'm gonna briefly post about just this one so I can kinda get it off my chest:
Just now I discovered that TWO YouTube channels I'd at some point seen a couple of videos of, liked those videos, and wanted to watch more of eventually have ended recently... one (Etika) is actually GONE now, and the other (cobanermani456) is still there but no new videos will be made, apparently because of a controversy that spiraled out of something that sounds a lot like mistakes I have made in the past...
THIS IS FREAKING ME OUT NOW. Just like earlier this year when I found out that THREE webcomics I wanted to read were gone now.
ANYTHING I LIKE CAN BE TAKEN DOWN AT ANY MOMENT. THERE IS NO LONGER ANY REASON NOT TO PANIC.

Weekly(?) Miiverse Backup: Posts from July 2013
Sun, Sep. 9th, 2018 00:14About time I posted another one of these. If I'd stuck to my intended schedule of posting my Miiverse backup entries once a week, this would've been posted between June 24 and 30, 2018.
I'll get caught up someday...
At least I can prove I'm still capable of posting entries that don't mention the Quidd drama!... wait a minute... DANG IT! :P

For my birthday I got (along with other games and things) money to get NSLU from the eShop, so I'm gonna do that now… If I'm not back in an hour, send a not-being-distracted-by-Miiverse after me XD

(I wonder what I was doing if it took me three whole days after my birthday to post this. Probably playing Kid Icarus: Uprising - I got that for the same birthday, but didn't get to post about it on Miiverse for a while because there were no 3DS game communities back then except for Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon.
Also, I think this is the only time I posted about a game that was out by then, but that I didn't have yet. I may be wrong though.)

Got NSLU and liking it so far! I wish there were an official in-story explanation of why Mario's not there, though, if only so there wouldn't be fan speculation... But I'm liking the game :)

(That's how you know that this post predates Game Theory's "Mario is Mental" videos - I found some other Mario-related fan speculation annoying enough that I had to post a mini-rant about it.
Also, like the next few, this ended up in the NSMBU community instead of NSLU because for whatever reason, New Super Luigi U didn't give me nearly as many opportunities to post from in-game, which was the only way to post in the NSLU community at all.)

Why is it that this is the first time I've gotten asked to post to Miiverse in NSLU?

(Again, this is my first AND last post in the NSLU community. I think we continued playing New Super Luigi U for a while after this, but not long enough for us to get around to 100% completing it unlike with NSMBU. I should finish that someday. This was also my last Miiverse post of 2013 - it would be about 5 or 6 months [139 days, to be exact] until I finally started posting again, setting another new record for my longest hiatus.)
I'll get caught up someday...
At least I can prove I'm still capable of posting entries that don't mention the Quidd drama!... wait a minute... DANG IT! :P

Garfaversary
Thu, Jun. 21st, 2018 19:06I'm two days behind in posting about this (I don't post about ANYTHING the day it happens anymore, apparently...) but happy 40th anniversary, Garfield! :)
I still remember back when Garfield's 25th anniversary was pretty recent. I was REALLY obsessed with Garfield in that era (2003-2004)... I can't believe that era was fifteen years ago. (Or that, interestingly enough, I'm going to be 25 in less than a month!)
Mini-rant time: I kinda don't like how there are soooo many people nowadays (especially authors of other comics I like) who think that Garfield is objectively never funny, or objectively less funny than it used to be, or what have you... because of them (and especially because of how, at least in 2013-2015 or so, Square Root of Minus Garfield steadily became less about what I liked about it - surreal, often mathematical mashups of Garfield strips - and more of a place for people to edit Garfield comics to insult fans of whatever they don't like, which is more often than not Garfield itself), I feel like I'm not allowed to like what I like. Not even the fact that I know there's plenty of Garfield fans in my LJ friends list keeps me from worrying about it. :( And yes, a big part of why I'm posting this entry is so hopefully I can finally get this off my chest after worrying about it sporadically for the past several years.
EDIT: And now that the YouTube video that made me worry about this the most recently and motivated me to post a mini-rant like this showed up in related videos a second time, might as well link to it in this entry.

Weekly(?) Miiverse Backup: Posts from March 2013
Wed, Jun. 13th, 2018 19:03For whatever reason, I only made two Miiverse posts in March 2013. I have no idea why I posted so few of them that month even though it was when I was still pretty obsessed with Miiverse, or why I somehow still ended up two weeks behind my self-imposed schedule for these Miiverse rerun entries regardless.

If you're not into Super Smash Bros. or Super Mario Maker... and maybe even if you ARE into those games but aren't as obsessed with Mary O. as I am... then this entry will probably be of no interest to you and you should probably skip it unless you REALLY want to know what goes on inside my head. :P
Being the Nintendo nerd I am, ever since the first Super Smash Bros. I sometimes tried to imagine what it would be like if various characters (video game or otherwise) that weren't playable in any SSB games yet were.
But I don't think I've ever come up with a complete moveset for one until now. Usually all I think of is:
- "What would Kirby look like if he copied this character?"
- "What would this character's alternate costumes be?"
- (for characters who aren't from a series that's already in the game) "What would this character's series symbol be?"
- MAYBE a game mechanic that would be unique to that one character
- MAYBE taunts and MAYBE special moves and a Final Smash.
And usually I don't write about or draw any of these ideas either - just think about it.
But lately, due to my constantly being obsessed with Mary O. (who unfortunately is still obscure enough that I feel like I have to link to that article again), I've been thinking more and more about what it'd be like if she and Yamamura were playable in Super Smash Bros. as a 2-in-1 character similar to Duck Hunt.
In fact I first thought of this idea at some point before April Fools' Day 2017 (see the music tag for that entry), but lately I've been thinking more and more about how this could work, enough that I think I have ideas for their entire hypothetical moveset by now.
And I keep thinking about said moveset so much that writing an entry about it is probably the only way I'm ever going to stop being so distracted thinking about it, even though I doubt it'd be interesting to anyone here (none of you are as obsessed with Mary O. as I am, and a lot of you probably aren't even into Super Smash Bros. enough for this to be of interest to you). So I'll LJ-cut it so I won't bore you. :)
( Blah blah blah Mary O. moving sideways )
It feels so weird that I've put all this thought into making an entire moveset and such for Mary O. & Yamamura for literally no reason since I doubt I'd be making a Super Smash Bros. fangame or hack anytime soon... and it feels especially weird to actually be typing out this ridiculous idea after spending so much time only thinking about it...

More archived Miiverse posts even though I somehow JUST NOW realized that maybe I should check archive.org to see if anything on Miiverse that I thought was lost forever (i.e. wasn't in the backup Nintendo emailed me) was accessible there, and as it turns out, there's a LOT that's still available that way! Including my own posts! And the comments on at least some of them! And my replies to other people's posts! Why didn't I think to try that until now??
I'm still going to make these Miiverse backup entries the same way I was going to (because who knows if they're ALL on archive.org, and even if they are, it'd be easier to find them in these entries, and I like getting to add commentary about some of them in retrospect), but...wow. I can still access so much content on Miiverse that I thought was gone forever! Maybe I'll go back later on and edit these entries to include not just how MANY comments I had on my Miiverse posts, but exactly what those comments were if I can find them!

I first made this on my computer in Paint by taking the sprite [from a Mario spritesheet I got from spriters-resource.com that had been saved on my computer ever since the days of PrtSc Land] and recoloring it to grayscale and resizing to 500%, then I replaced all the gray pixels with different patterns of black and white stripes. Then I recreated the whole thing pixel-by-pixel on Miiverse. I don't remember how long it took.
Also this is the first of the only two times I made [non-reply] Miiverse posts with no words in them!

(At this point I was intending to make a post like this for every multiple of 250 Yeahs up to at least 1,000 - possibly up to 2,000 - then doing it every 500 or 1,000 Yeahs after that. But eventually I forgot about all of this and 250 Yeahs was the only milestone I ended up celebrating.
I don't know how many Yeahs I had by the time Miiverse shut down - I've said before that it was 1,788, but from archive.org it looks like that's actually how many Yeahs *I* gave to *other* people's posts. Now I'm hoping I didn't make the same incorrect assumption when I posted this...
