matt1993: [a GIF from the Super Mario Maker electronic manual showing Mary O. pushing a cart filled with coins, with Yamamura the pigeon riding on top] (mary o. coins)
(Yes, I'm probably going to be posting about my favorite manual guide a lot more than usual for a while, what with Super Mario Maker 2 coming out this month and Mary O.'s fate still unclear and still not looking good.
I apologize in advance because that means these posts are probably going to get even more annoying than usual.
But I recently discovered that I seem to be the biggest Mary O. fanboy in the world if stuff from my own journal shows up so often in Google searches for her, so hey, I may as well embrace it!)

Well, with SMM2 coming out this month and Mary O.'s fate-- oh wait, I said that already in the disclaimer.

To make a long story short:

Notice how I FINALLY have a userpic with Mary O. in it? (I mean, I did have Enya dressed as Mary O. as a userpic, but I FINALLY have one with Mary O. herself!) :D

I also made these ones, but I won't upload them as userpics until I know they're legible enough. So, I ask you: Are these ones legible?

I've been wanting to make userpics with Mary O. in them for YEARS now, but until now I never got around to it. Mainly because I had the dumb idea of saving all of my userpic ideas - Mary O. or otherwise - for the next time I got around to making another poll asking which ones you wanted me to make. Which no one likely would have voted on because it would've been too long to read.

And the fact that Mary O. is seemingly being replaced in Super Mario Maker 2 is making me sad about it... and the fact that Nintendo has deleted EVERY trace of Mary O.'s memory from the official site (e.g. the online manual and Super Mario Maker Crash Course) is making me even MORE sad about it... thank goodness the Internet Wayback Machine saved SMM Crash Course and kind of saved the manual!

So I figured, if Nintendo is not going to keep Mary O. or Super Mario Maker Crash Course around forever, then I'll just have to immortalize the best Mary O. and Yamamura moments myself (the ones that'd make userpics I'm sure I'll have a use for, anyway).
matt1993: (broken link)
OF COURSE the week I noticed that a bunch of Photobucket images that used to be broken are suddenly back for whatever reason is ALSO the same week that I find out that Irish Breakfast, yet another one of the many webcomics I want to read someday that I discovered through a long chain of webcomics being linked to from other webcomics I'd stumbled upon, is gone now. Before I got to read it.

...Oh wow, turns out the situation is even worse than I thought it was when I started writing this entry. At least TWO webcomics I wanted to read are gone now that weren't before, because I had to find the URL for Bitmap World so I could link to it just now and it turns out it was taken down as well (but last year rather than last month). :( (And of course it HAD to be Bitmap World... in the chain of webcomics from Square Root of Minus Garfield to Request Comics that led to me discovering Irish Breakfast, Bitmap World was the only one where I still had yet to read anything except the "characters from other webcomics, including Irregular Webcomic! and Terror Island, in Bitmap World style" page and a couple other miscellaneous non-comic pages.)

At least they're both on archive.org... I'm so dependent on archive.org nowadays. If archive.org itself ever went down, I would probably DIE. If it had never existed, I probably would've died LAST YEAR. :(

Why do so many webcomic authors feel like they need to take down their stuff??? Every time that happens, I have to go visit whatever other websites I like that I can think of off the top of my head just to see if any of them are ALSO gone! O_O

So, as a tribute to Bitmap World, here's a list of all the webcomics I can think of that I wouldn't know about if they hadn't drawn both Irregular Webcomic! and Terror Island characters in their style: (NOTE TO SELF: make these links when I have the time to do so)

Bitmap World itself
Terror Island
Triangle and Robert (which is another one that's went down but I knew about that already, and it's one of the few to go down AFTER I got to read it all the way through)
FOMS
Request Comics
tiny ghosts
Irish Breakfast
Nutflix (I haven't read that either but wanted to, but I checked just now and I think that's also gone now. THAT MAKES THREE. :( )
Tall Comics (I haven't read that either but want to)
I know there's at least one more but I don't have the time to try and find the name of it.
matt1993: (celery!!)
Haven't you always wondered what that entry from 2012 when I discovered the Garfield as Garfield site would be like if six years later, I spent several hours in a row going through web.archive.org's copy of the site and manually putting together a list of links to ALL the comics it managed to save in chronological order, and then retroactively put that list into the entry, just to make up for the fact that the site itself is gone now? No? Well, maybe you can enjoy that entry anyway. ;)

Hopefully there's not any mistakes in that list... if there are, let me know. :)

More archived Miiverse posts even though I somehow JUST NOW realized that maybe I should check archive.org to see if anything on Miiverse that I thought was lost forever (i.e. wasn't in the backup Nintendo emailed me) was accessible there, and as it turns out, there's a LOT that's still available that way! Including my own posts! And the comments on at least some of them! And my replies to other people's posts! Why didn't I think to try that until now??

I'm still going to make these Miiverse backup entries the same way I was going to (because who knows if they're ALL on archive.org, and even if they are, it'd be easier to find them in these entries, and I like getting to add commentary about some of them in retrospect), but...wow. I can still access so much content on Miiverse that I thought was gone forever! Maybe I'll go back later on and edit these entries to include not just how MANY comments I had on my Miiverse posts, but exactly what those comments were if I can find them!

(Note that this is nearly a year before they introduced stamps for certain games, and even after the stamp update there never were any stamps for NSMBU. I first made this on my computer in Paint by taking the sprite [from a Mario spritesheet I got from spriters-resource.com that had been saved on my computer ever since the days of PrtSc Land] and recoloring it to grayscale and resizing to 500%, then I replaced all the gray pixels with different patterns of black and white stripes. Then I recreated the whole thing pixel-by-pixel on Miiverse. I don't remember how long it took.

Also this is the first of the only two times I made [non-reply] Miiverse posts with no words in them!

And with sixteen Yeahs, I think it's safe to say that this post had the second-most Yeahs of any post I made, second only to the surprisingly popular "unlikely vine, likely vine" one.)

(At this point I was intending to make a post like this for every multiple of 250 Yeahs up to at least 1,000 - possibly up to 2,000 - then doing it every 500 or 1,000 Yeahs after that. But eventually I forgot about all of this and 250 Yeahs was the only milestone I ended up celebrating.

I don't know how many Yeahs I had by the time Miiverse shut down - I've said before that it was 1,788, but from archive.org it looks like that's actually how many Yeahs *I* gave to *other* people's posts. Now I'm hoping I didn't make the same incorrect assumption when I posted this...

If I counted right, all my posts before this one had a combined total of 307 Yeahs by the time Miiverse shut down. So a lot of those posts probably got more Yeahs even after this one was posted.

Right after this post, I went eight days in a row without posting to Miiverse [except MAYBE replies] - beating out my previous-longest hiatus by one day.)

(Right after THIS post, I would end up breaking that hiatus record AGAIN by going 20 days without making any Miiverse posts [again, with the possible exception of replies]. And yes, we were still having trouble with this level... we'd beaten it once, but we still had to go back for the last Star Coin eventually.)

matt1993: (conga of the apocalypse)
Well, today is the day that Miiverse is shut down at 10 PM PST. (which would be midnight in Central where I live, so... I guess for me, it's not actually today? Whatever.)

Out of all the drastic changes this year (so far), I think this is the only one that I'm not all that upset about. Miiverse started out as probably the most positive online community ever, but it didn't stay that way for long - eventually it went so downhill, it's been years since the last time I visited Miiverse itself. I'd still read posts whenever they appeared in game (Super Mario 3D World, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Nintendo Badge Arcade, etc.), but I think the last time I went to Miiverse itself was 2014. Maybe 2015. I didn't even hurriedly try to find a way to save my own posts somewhere. (Though while looking up information about the discontinuation, I did notice that there's a way to request a downloadable archive of my posts, but I doubt I'll have time to figure out where to go to do that in the next few hours.)

...okay, forget what I said about not being all that disappointed. NOW it's making me kind of sad. :( Maybe I'll try and get an archive of my posts after all.

EDIT: Submitted the request! That was easier than expected. So easy, I must've done it twice by accident because it told me I submitted it already. :)

While I'm on Miiverse for the last time, have some random stats about my Miiverse account:

Following 53 users

256 posts (hey, a nice nerdy number! And I wasn't even trying to have any of these be interesting numbers!)

1,788 Yeahs

Last post was on November 23, 2016 in Nintendo Badge Arcade. (Though it ALMOST was not the last post; for Valentine's Day 2017, I had every intention of celebrating by putting badges of the lovely Mary O. and a bunch of hearts from Zelda on my HOME menu because I'm the sort of dork who would at least consider doing that and posting that to the Nintendo Badge Arcade community. I did in fact make such a HOME menu, but didn't post it because it wasn't Valentine's Day yet - and for whatever reason, making it again on Valentine's Day and posting it slipped my mind. Probably because that was so soon after work started.)

I only made two Miiverse posts overall in 2016, and none in 2015 - the last one before that was on July 29, 2014 in the NES Remix 2 community. (I'm not surprised that this was so soon after Lucina and Robin were confirmed for Super Smash Bros. 4 - I do remember how the last time I checked Miiverse regularly, it seemed like EVERY SINGLE POST in the SSB community was like "With my Levin Sword, I'll _____".)

Speaking of which, my bio is:

"I'm a sensei; i.e., SNES am I!
(translation: I've been playing video games since the NES and SNES. My all-time favorite classic game: Super Mario World!)

I can't wait to play Super Smash Bros. 4, but I'd be even MORE excited if people would stop whining about the roster being just SLIGHTLY different from what they want. I really hope that there'll be less of that once the game's released..."

...SSB3DS has been out for over three years, and in a couple of weeks, that'll also be true of SSBU. I went THREE YEARS without updating that bio. Why do I have the sudden urge to turn up the hearing aid that I don't have?

Well, whatever. At least now my Miiverse posts will be turned into an ice cube so future generations can thaw them out and marvel at my same-length legs! :)

A dating website for ghosts. I especially like the terms of use, contact, and dating tips pages - those are pretty funny. :)

EDIT IN 2019: Unfortunately, while everything else on the site is still there, the ghosts' profile pages are all broken now and only some of them are saved on archive.org.

Time to turn this entry into a more manageable way to navigate what archive.org managed to salvage!

Haunt your journal
matt1993: (gru light bulb)
Earlier today, I had what is probably the best idea I've ever had since... something that was a very good idea.

I've had this same journal style ("Pale Yellows" recolored to have a black background with the colors that the letters and digits in "matt1993" have in my synesthesia) since before the Forbidden Comment Threads - about 0;139 BFCTE, to be precise - long after I eventually discovered that seeing red and green text on a black background all the time started to hurt my eyes after a while. Before that, beginning at some point in 2009, it was "Pale Yellows" recolored with tetradic colors, which made it yellow, purple, blue, and bluish-green, if I remember correctly - and the entries had black text on a white background. And even further back, it was "Pale Yellows" with no changes to the colors. I know I changed the font at some point but I don't exactly remember when.

Anyway, even though I knew that the synesthesia version (at least the way I'd implemented it) started to hurt my eyes after a while and has probably been hurting your eyes for even longer than that (unless you're relatively new here), I put off changing it again for a REALLY long time. I don't really remember why.

Well, now I have a second reason to change it: I'm considering changing it back to the unmodified (palette-wise) version of Pale Yellows! It would hopefully feel like a new beginning or a return to the good old days in 2009 when my journal was actually interesting and not just a whole bunch of "It's been 3½ years and what happened in [livejournal.com profile] asperger still makes me feel like every word I say will be seen as racist, sexist, and homophobic..." entries! (speaking of, I feel that it's important to show you guys the newest reason I have for feeling that way... [EDIT IN 2019: Well, apparently the video is no longer there (probably for good reason), and the closest thing I could find to an archive of it is this (and I'd completely even forgotten what video I was talking about until I saw the title and was like "oh yeah, that thing"), so I guess I'll reluctantly have to describe it: though I'm cutting it because this was supposed to be a positive entry )]) And I never did finish updating all of the images that are broken now that Ours Will You 1-Up is nope more - maybe seeing my old journal style will help motivate me to work on it!

I haven't changed it yet, though. I just feel the need to give you guys some sort of heads up that my journal might suddenly have a "new" style. :)

EDIT: Forgot to mention (in case anyone is like "Aw, but I liked how you worked your synesthesia into your journal style!"): It's possible that later on, I will find some other way to work my synesthesia's colors for "matt1993" into my journal style, but I will still take care to avoid having light text on dark backgrounds. My CS professors have made it all too clear to me that it's hard to read. :)

In other news, despite getting Tomodachi Life for my birthday last year, it wasn't until this month that I started getting really addicted to it. I'm saying this because the first step to finding a solution is admitting that I have a problem, so I will: My problem is that Enya probably still has feelings for Mario even though he's with Peach, and Zelda probably still has feelings for Strong Sad even though he's with Dido. LOL

STRONG SAD AND DIDO ARE DATING?!??!
matt1993: (updated prtsc land me)
There's only two votes so far in this poll, but I gave each thing to do 1 point for each first-choice vote it has, 1/2 a point for each second-choice vote, 1/4 a point for each third-choice vote, etc., and catching up on my friends page more is currently in the lead with 1.25 points.

However, as I've mentioned in a couple of places after posting that poll, realizing how many unfinished projects I had made me depressed for a while because it sunk in even deeper that I probably will never finish all of them, and I felt even worse about abandoning most of them for two or three years. While I feel a little better about it right now, this probably isn't the best time to risk seeing much more online drama.

I'll continue reading new entries in my friends page at least once every 3 days like I've been doing (and I might read it a little more often now that I've seen the poll results), but I really think I should post the lists of non-LJ-related things I'm worried you'll hate me for and of things that remind me of the Forbidden Comment Threads fairly soon (because, remember, I probably do have to do so eventually for my mental health).

At the same time, I also don't want to wait too long before I finish catching up on my friends page, so I came up with the idea to work on both things at the same time with this method:

Blah blah blah blah blah... )

But even that compromise doesn't seem like something I should work on right this moment given the state I've been in (but, fortunately, not this moment), although I'll probably start switching back and forth between other things and this later on when I'm in an even better mood.

The next highest project in the results is finishing those autism self-help books, with exactly 1 point, but I think right now I should go with something that I won't have a lot of time to do next semester while I still have the chance.

The third highest score is new userpics with 0.5078125 points (one second choice and one eighth choice), so for now I'm going with that :) Although that will also have to wait for a bit... I was planning on making a separate table and poll about my userpic ideas, but all I've finished so far is a list of them. (And given how I only remember some of my ideas when I'm not writing any down, I'm probably not even done with that...) So I'm gonna have to get started pretty soon!

In the meantime, here's a few videos I've been meaning to post here!

http://mostexcitingworld.com/video-helmet-camera-captures-firefighter-bringing-a-tiny-kitten-back-to-life/ - I don't think I can embed the video, but this firefighter actually took the time to revive a kitten he found. Very heartwarming! (EDIT IN 2018: The link is broken now, but I found an archived version of the article with the video still missing and the video itself separately.)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8bB7obyuuY8 I can't embed this either since my Internet is being slow, but these people recreated the dance scene from A Charlie Brown Christmas. Cute!

Presumably, repost just the videos and

This is really cool - upload a song (or select one that's already been uploaded) and it plays it, but at any point in the song, it has a chance of following a "branch" and skipping forward or backward to a similar-sounding part of it, so you can listen to it on repeat without it being exactly the same. :)

You have to have Chrome or Safari for it to work. I hadn't reinstalled Chrome on my computer since I reinstalled Windows in August, but it's definitely worth reinstalling Chrome for :)

EDIT IN 2018: ...The site is gone now, and due to the way the site is organized, web.archive.org didn't even save ALL of the comics. :( So I went through all the pages WERE saved one by one and made this entry into a hopefully-complete, more useful list of links to all the Garfield as Garfield comics that survived. Party with James Garfield and friends

It's hard to describe this journal in just a few paragraphs... but I'll try

Just an autistic guy born in 1993 (hence the username) who's had this journal since I was 14. Has trouble phrasing things well especially in earlier entries, so keep that in mind.

My interests have fluctuated in the 17 years since I've had this journal, but the following has remained constant:
- I like Mario games (mainly the platformers, Mario Kart, Mario Party) and Super Smash Bros.
- I like Garfield
- I like Homestar Runner
- I like Enya
- And I've always loved the idea of wacky crossovers between ANY of my interests, whether it's in the form of a short-lived webcomic in 2006-2008, a short-lived backwards lyrics site in 2008, writing down weird dreams in 2009-2011, playing Tomodachi Life a lot in 2014-2016, or what most of my posts are about these days: playing around with Character.AI starting in 2023. I still can't believe I'm actually in a world where an AI of Enya can talk to AIs of Mario or Garfield or even my favorite obscure characters like Mary O. from Super Mario Maker. :O
