I'm two days behind in posting about this (I don't post about ANYTHING the day it happens anymore, apparently...) but happy 40th anniversary, Garfield! :)
I still remember back when Garfield's 25th anniversary was pretty recent. I was REALLY obsessed with Garfield in that era (2003-2004)... I can't believe that era was fifteen years ago. (Or that, interestingly enough, I'm going to be 25 in less than a month!)
Mini-rant time: I kinda don't like how there are soooo many people nowadays (especially authors of other comics I like) who think that Garfield is objectively never funny, or objectively less funny than it used to be, or what have you... because of them (and especially because of how, at least in 2013-2015 or so, Square Root of Minus Garfield steadily became less about what I liked about it - surreal, often mathematical mashups of Garfield strips - and more of a place for people to edit Garfield comics to insult fans of whatever they don't like, which is more often than not Garfield itself), I feel like I'm not allowed to like what I like. Not even the fact that I know there's plenty of Garfield fans in my LJ friends list keeps me from worrying about it. :( And yes, a big part of why I'm posting this entry is so hopefully I can finally get this off my chest after worrying about it sporadically for the past several years.

Being the Nintendo nerd I am, ever since the first Super Smash Bros. I sometimes tried to imagine what it would be like if various characters (video game or otherwise) that weren't playable in any SSB games yet were.
But I don't think I've ever come up with a complete moveset for one until now. Usually all I think of is:
- "What would Kirby look like if he copied this character?"
- "What would this character's alternate costumes be?"
- (for characters who aren't from a series that's already in the game) "What would this character's series symbol be?"
- MAYBE a game mechanic that would be unique to that one character
- MAYBE taunts and MAYBE special moves and a Final Smash.
And usually I don't write about or draw any of these ideas either - just think about it.
But lately, due to my constantly being obsessed with Mary O. (who unfortunately is still obscure enough that I feel like I have to link to that article again), I've been thinking more and more about what it'd be like if she and Yamamura were playable in Super Smash Bros. as a 2-in-1 character similar to Duck Hunt.
In fact I first thought of this idea at some point before April Fools' Day 2017 (see the music tag for that entry), but lately I've been thinking more and more about how this could work, enough that I think I have ideas for their entire hypothetical moveset by now.
And I keep thinking about said moveset so much that writing an entry about it is probably the only way I'm ever going to stop being so distracted thinking about it, even though I doubt it'd be interesting to anyone here (none of you are as obsessed with Mary O. as I am, and a lot of you probably aren't even into Super Smash Bros. enough for this to be of interest to you). So I'll LJ-cut it so I won't bore you. :)

The first thing I thought was "Even with that many characters and the likelihood that most of them are going to be joke characters, I bet this list is STILL not going to even consider Mary O. even as a joke character..."

Every time he put in a joke character (a non-game character, an Internet meme, some random fanart of a character who's already in SSB, an inanimate object, his dog, etc...), I was like "He included this but probably didn't include Mary O..."
Towards the end, I was like "29 characters to go and still no Mary O..."
At 491-500, the end of the "whatever video game characters he could think of" section:

Oh wait, April Fools' Day is already pretty much over. That, and this "exclusive photo" might also just be an existing photo of Enya edited onto a Super Mario Maker background and with Mary O.'s clothes drawn over hers. Made by me. Because, again, my entry about Mary O. and Yamamura: The Movie was an April Fools prank. :P
( Why I didn't actually use that picture in the entry itself - cut because I'm guessing that out of my April Fools entries, the MO&Y entry was the least interesting to anyone besides me )

Oh, and all those other things (Photobucket somehow taking down non-Photobucket userpics; my considering deleting this journal; my other journal being suspended; this site shutting down) were April Fools pranks too, even if you see this before I'm done changing the Photobucket placeholder userpics back to the normal ones (which I probably won't get done with all of tonight). So please, don't panic. Please. :)
I have to say, after over three years of trying to fix various broken images and other things in my journal, it was so surreal putting time and energy into breaking some of my images instead. :P
This is pretty much how it felt!
To those of you who've read any of these April Fools entries and still like me: Thank you for tolerating and putting up with the fact that I have such a weird sense of humor. Also thank you for putting up with my fanboying, if you read that one. :P

Even if you normally read my entries only on LJ or DW, I recommend making an exception here and reading both copies of each of my April Fools entries, because as part of the joke this year, I might have thrown my usual attempts at making my LJ and DW look nearly identical out the window for the day and deliberately introduced a few subtle differences between the versions of these entries... ;)

You know what? I'm just calling it Weekly Miiverse Backup from now on instead of Miiverse Backup Twuednesday. My goal is still to post these on Tuesday or Wednesday as many weeks as possible - I'm just not gonna keep pretending that I'm good at sticking to it. Since now it's closer to next Tuesday and Wednesday than the one I was supposed to post it on. :P

(This is probably the first Soviet Russia joke I ever made - not just on Miiverse, but ever. I used to find them overused along with many other Internet memes that I hadn't heard of before 2008 or so and didn't understand, but then when I discovered mezzacotta in 2011, I really liked how certain characters make surreal Soviet Russia jokes - with this one probably being the most famous - and decided Soviet Russia jokes in general weren't so bad after all. Most of the Internet memes that annoyed me back then are a lot funnier than certain more recent Internet memes...)

Translation:
Here's a Super Mario Bros. corrupted gameplay video that I discovered years ago - like, 2007-2009, probably - that I found so hilarious that I probably would've posted it to LiveJournal had I been active on LJ at the time. But I didn't since I wasn't as active on LJ back then. And somehow, I never got around to posting it to LiveJournal (or DreamWidth) in the intervening 8-10 years. UNTIL NOW!! Would you look at that!
At least the super-long delay means that I'm posting this after Super Mario Maker became a thing and therefore I get to point out that, in retrospect, Mario's name showing up as "M RY-" now reminds me of Mary O. (Even more so when I add an apostrophe-S!) :P
A broken broken video
Tue, Oct. 3rd, 2017 21:07Over the past year or two, I've come across SOOOO many broken images, broken videos, no-longer-existent pages and websites, etc., that when I reread this LJ entry from 2010 (and also its mild-mannered alter ego, the DW counterpart), my first thought was "Oh great, ANOTHER broken video?... wait, no, that was just me hitting Enter several times to represent waiting a few seconds for someone to guess."
That's kind of funny, but it's also a testament to how so many things have in fact disappeared from the Internet in the last few years. :( But still kind of funny. :)

This has been kind of a disappointing April Fools' Day because:
1) Homestar Runner didn't update at all today, even though they did for April Fools' Day 2014, 2015, and 2016, and April Fools and Halloween are almost the only times they ever update nowadays.
2) I don't think many people noticed my April Fools prank at all.
For reference, my April Fools prank was this entry; however, when I first posted it (on March 31 in my time zone, but late enough that it was April 1 already for some of you), it was an exact copy of my first entry. Then I waited a few minutes or so and changed it to a copy of a different past entry in the same way... then changed it to another after a few more minutes, and so on - basically, if I was at my computer, I'd change the entry anywhere from once an hour to once every few minutes. (At first. I gradually updated it less and less often because it seemed like no one was noticing...)
By "exact copy", that means including the subject line, repost button, userpic, tags, mood, music, location... basically, everything except the timestamp, the comments, and friends-only status [though, of course, the only friends-only entries I used were ones that probably would've been fine being public]. And anything that I intended to change each time but accidentally forgot sometimes. Though if I used an entry I'd posted in![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-community.gif)
_dreams_, autism, or asperger, I added a notice saying that it was cross-posted (even though I don't think copying a community entry to my own journal years later for April Fools' Day actually counts as cross-posting).
I chose the entries semi-randomly, sometimes by going to my Calendar for random years and months and picking a random entry I'd feel comfortable posting again, and sometimes by just putting in notable entries that I remember and wanted to include in this prank at some point. Some entries were used more than once.
And just to mess with your heads even more, I thought it might be fun to come up with a hypothetical FUTURE entry and add it into the mix! That's what the 2023 year in review is for. It ended up being my favorite thing about this prank, so I left that one up significantly longer than any other single entry.
Now that April Fools' Day is over, all the entries I ended up using are listed below for posterity. (Don't expect the repost buttons to work correctly, though...)

You'd think that given how easy it probably is to misunderstand my previous entry, I would've posted again as soon as I thought of something else to post about. But nope, somehow I let an easily-misunderstood entry be the newest one for a month minus a few hours.

Lately I've just had SO MUCH to do that not only do I not get much time to relax, but whenever I do get to take a break, it's usually not actually that relaxing because I still end up thinking about the stuff that has to get done soon.

Super Mario World Randomizer
Wed, Sep. 28th, 2016 02:40As if corrupted SMW levels and randomly-generated semi-coherent text weren't amusing enough on their own, now they're combined into one thing: the Super Mario World Randomizer!
The level names kind of remind me of a vague idea I had for a LJ meme several years ago, after I found out about the LJ Dungeon Adventure and LJ Space Adventure memes; I thought it might be cool if someone made some sort of "LJ Mario Adventure" where you put in a LJ username and it would generate a series of Mario levels at random that had something to do with that user's interest list.
(Though I never did anything with this idea because "something" was the key word here; the dungeon and space adventures can say "Bones are scattered in the shape of <arbitrary LJ interest>" or "You hear the sound of <arbitrary LJ interest> echoing through the ventilation shafts" and leave that up to the imagination, but making a randomized Mario game like that would require making a way for it to come up with what an <arbitrary LJ interest> Shell or <arbitrary LJ interest> Mushroom or whatever would look like and do based just on the name. Or, come to think of it, I guess it could work with only the level names having LJ interests in them. Enya Challenge anyone? [And yes, that entry I linked to is unfortunately a VERY accurate representation of my writing style 7 years ago. That's why I want to make my own dream journal someday...])

Right now, I'm wondering what the next Strong Bad E-mail will be like. You should check them out (on homestarrunner.com); they are really funny and were the inspiration for some of my funny screenshots (again, more info on profile page).

Wow, now that I've changed my journal style back to what it used to be (although my actual first entry predates this style by... I think a year and a half), it IS easier to convince myself that I haven't wasted the past 3½ years worrying about being judged for everything I do! (Or at least it's easier than it was the last time I quoted my first entry. And not just because I misquoted it a little that time.)
Hopefully it'll stay that way!
By the way, you might have noticed that even though I implied that I would only change the colors of my journal back to what they were, I went ahead and changed the font back to whatever it was too. This is because soon after I changed it to Andalus in the first place, I noticed that certain special characters appear slightly misplaced from the rest of the text when written in Andalus (e.g. "Schächter", "Schrödinger", "Wænya" - but apparently not "Pokémon"), so ever since then, I occasionally considered picking a different font but never got around to it. Well, now I did!
I also changed my journal title back to "Tidbits of Matt's Life" - what it used to be long before it was "Life and times of a cancelled author". I'm still referencing "author cancelled" in the subtitle, though - it's "A cancelled author attempting to let go of the past" instead of "My board of regrets".

That fighting game starring such iconic video game all-stars as Larry, Mario, Princess Twinkie, Yogi, Kong 1, Zelda, The Beautiful Woman Interviewing Me, Shamu, Pudgy Airplane, Donald Duck's Offspring, Wombat?, Crash Bandicoot, Yellow Man, Charlie Brown, King Arthur, Knights of the Crooked Sword, Pegasus Dude, The Princess of Something, Triangle-Nosed Boy, The Unknown Yoga Person, Kid With a Crazy Sword Thing, Garfield and Friends, Something the Hedgehog, a LEGO, Happy, and more? ;)
Yeah, apparently, at some point around the time the 3DS and Wii U versions were released, there was a trend of people on YouTube showing their relatives (or, in at least one case, random people) all the playable characters' artwork and asking them to try to guess their names.
These are all of the videos of this sort that I've found so far*, and most of them are just so funny that even if you have no interest in video games whatsoever, I recommend that you watch at least one! :D (I highly recommend not reading the comments on certain ones, though...)

*Except for one that's in Spanish and doesn't have enough subtitles for me to understand anything besides the characters' actual names. Also, eventually I found that there were so many that I decided to narrow it down by just watching ones that had at least a thousand views for now (though that was after I watched a couple that had less).
