matt1993: (speed limit 25 upside-down)
Ever since I found out about image sonification (converting an image to a sound or vice versa - in this case, with the horizontal axis corresponding to time and the vertical axis corresponding to pitch), I'd wondered if anyone had ever been able to listen to music "upside-down" by reversing the image vertically so that low pitches become high pitches and vice versa, but I could never find one. However, while trying to find a free program I'd downloaded a while back that used a different approach to image sonification (but I'd either deleted or forgotten about), I finally stumbled upon a program that can edit music as if it were an image, including turning it upside-down!

And there's even a free demo! Isn't it amazing when something you wish existed turns out to exist after all? :)

I never did find the other program that I forgot the name of, though, but I'm wondering if anyone out there happens to know of it.

Its method of converting an image to music, using my uChIN RA G userpic as an example:

Assuming that the red channel is mapped to piano, the green is drums, and the blue is flute (there's over 200 instruments to choose from, I think), most of the piece would be silent (for the plain black background), but towards the middle, the piano would play at only one pitch that is slightly lower than the highest pitch it allows (since all red values on the text are 248), the drums would play at two pitches (that one plus a slightly lower and quieter one for green values of 192, corresponding to the darker yellow/orange pixels), and, occasionally, the flute would play at that same high pitch (as there's only a few pixels - namely, the white pixels - where the blue is 248 instead of 0). And there's options to treat it as a grayscale image and only play one instrument, invert the colors (useful if there's more light colors than dark colors), lower the resolution to make a shorter piece, change the tempo, or have the tempo be faster whenever the instruments are quieter (to reduce the silence in this example).

If you didn't understand that, don't worry - you'd probably understand it better if you'd used the program I'm trying to describe, so that means you probably haven't. But if you do understand that, do you know what the program I'm talking about is called? Thanks!

Happy Fourth of July!

(This userpic doesn't go as well with the Fourth of July as I thought it did last year, especially if you're not familiar with the origin, but oh well...)

(I finally posted it. Here goes nothing...)

(By the way, [livejournal.com profile] pathvain_aelien and [livejournal.com profile] ellaina02, I added a few things after the proofreading)

What's sad is that recently-- Well, okay, not that recently, due to the long amount of time it took to write this entry, have it proofread, and continue to worry about whether or not it makes sense even after I had it proofread. But last October, I was hit with a realization similar to Character 15's, and I'm not even a randomly generated webcomic character.

This post is so long, I'm even using lj-spoiler tags as lj-cuts )

Happy (early in some timezones) St. Patrick's Day everyone!

I could have made my userpics green- (and perhaps somewhat orange-) tinted for today as I mentioned here, but I didn't think of it soon enough. Oh well.

I did change my Mii's hat in StreetPass Mii Plaza to Link's hat (since that's the only green hat I have so far), though :)

For those of you new here, it's become a tradition for me to post comics made with the Garfield Randomizer after I've been on hiatus for a while. And I've also promised to post some comics made with Garkov as well, but I never did, and I found about two more similar randomizer things in the meantime, so here you go!

I don't have any vision-impaired transcripts for my older ones yet, but I've added that as yet another entry on my to-do list :)

So turns out ACTA was postponed today! Yay!!

I'm gonna wait a little longer before I revert my protest userpics, so that just in case we find about another bill like SOPA/PIPA/ACTA that's somehow secretly been signed by nearly enough countries for it to pass without anyone knowing for years, I'll have slightly less work to do. Until then, I'll just use the ones I didn't get to replace. :)

To celebrate, here's another Previously on the X-Files:

I wonder who glued Mulder's hand to his face? Or maybe he's just taking "talk to the hand" too literally. :)

EDIT IN 2018: Not only is the image gone now, but I don't remember what any of it said :( But at least I remember that Mulder appearing to have his hand glued to his face throughout the entire thing was the best part in my opinion. :)

Okay, so SOPA and PIPA are gone, but ACTA apparently a) has been around since 2006, b) has already been signed by the U.S., and c) will ruin the Internet in exactly the same way? Sheesh. I'm bringing back my protest userpics (in fact, I brought back the ones that didn't mention SOPA specifically before I posted this entry), and I'm gonna put the protest-userpic idea out there again for anyone else who wants to protest with me. Don't know how to edit your userpic? No problem - let me know what userpic(s) you want to replace and what you want any text changed to, and I'll make it for you!

Does anyone know when the vote on ACTA is? I can't seem to find it, but I'd really like to know when the somewhat more impending apocalypse is...

YES! I had a feeling they would listen to Wikipedia, Google, and so on! Dunno if anyone in Congress saw some of my replaced userpics too, but I'll keep pretending they did :P

Starting tomorrow, I'm gonna change the userpics I did manage to replace back to normal, although the darkened versions will remain in my userpic space until a) we find out for sure that the compromise won't be just as bad (which I doubt it will, but still...) or b) I run out of room for normal userpics (which will take a while, as I'd need over 120 more for that to happen).

I'll also continue to make more, because even if SOPA did not ruin my life by making it impossible to ever finish my creative vortexes, the darkened userpics still count as at least 300* new creative vortexes that I've gotta get rid of. They just won't be my highest priority for now.

To celebrate, I'm gonna type as many words and phrases that SOPA's too-vague wording could have cracked down on my use of despite them being fair use or not even trademarked as I can in 10 minutes:

I'm against SOPA for all of the same reasons that the Gods of Being Able to Voice Opinions Better than Matt1993 (e.g. LiveJournal, Wikipedia, Google, Randall Munroe, Ryan North...) are - and this is coming from a guy who usually doesn't comment on anything controversial because he either becomes depressed about what side to be on or posts about an occurrence of a number like 206 in a news article or something rather than actually discussing the issue.

In fact, until SOPA is rejected, I'm going to do a clever take on the blackouts that Wikipedia, Wikia, xkcd and Dinosaur Comics (and any other websites I don't know about yet) have done - I'll blackout as many of my userpics (well, not really blackout - I'm not sure how to describe it, so just look at the userpic on this entry) as I can before the 24th (or whenever SOPA is rejected, or - if we're too unlucky for that - SOPA is repealed after becoming law). To keep this from turning out like my attempt at replacing userpics with PSL-styled variations (i.e., not getting to finish soon enough), I'm gonna upload each one as soon as I make it. Dunno how many I'll be able to replace before the impending apocalypse the Senate begins voting on it, though...

EDIT: These are even more difficult to make than I thought! I only got four finished today, but trust me, you don't need to see 112 shadowed userpics containing somewhere from 5 to 109 SOPA jokes to see my (and LJ's, and Wikipedia's, and Google's...) point. According to Google, the White House didn't even need one. I'm still gonna make more, though!

And yes, I know my LJ isn't well-known enough for this to have much of an impact, but I'm putting the idea out there for anyone else who wants to try it.

WHOA! Perfect timing, [livejournal.com profile] bullying_begone - today, I met my first real-life bully in 11 years. (So far, people online have only been mean to me when I actually say stupid stuff, so I don't count those.) In fact, this is a rare occurrence of me using my uChIN RA G userpic without having banned someone from commenting in my journal.

See, today in College Connections class (which was hard enough before I knew one of the other students would bully me), we did a couple of group activities, and the first was a common camp activity that's starting to get old, so you may have heard of it - it's that one where there's a "chocolate" "river" and two "islands" and we have to all cross to the other side using "marshmallows". (EDIT: Due to [livejournal.com profile] pathvain_aelien's confusion, I should say the only reason I put stuff in quotes in the previous sentence was to show they were pretend marshmallows or islands or whatever, and were actually rubber square tiles, hula hoops, etc.) The first time we did it, I lost two marshmallows in a row by forgetting to make sure someone else had their foot on them before I moved mine off of it, so once we were done, one guy who had collected about half of the marshmallows whacked me in the head with them. One girl said something like, "Hey, don't hit him with the marshmallows!", but no one else seemed to notice. It didn't physically hurt that much, and the pain went away quickly, but it still hurt me emotionally.

Then we had to try to do the same thing again, but faster, now that we knew the strategy. Although I had finally figured out to leave my foot on each marshmallow until I knew someone else's foot was there, I messed up in some other way that I still don't quite understand, so that guy hit me upside the head again (which, at the time, I thought was him still not forgiving me for my errors the first time), and either that same girl or a different girl told him not to, but again, no one else seemed to notice.

So after that activity and the other one they did (luckily, this time only 10 people had to volunteer to participate, because I was too depressed to want to participate in anything else), we discussed the differences in everyone's strategies and stuff. I called out the guy who had hit me with the pretend marshmallows, and since I was so depressed, I don't really remember what all was said, but at the time, it seemed like no one would talk to him about it because the professor didn't see.

After class, though, the guy did apologize to me, saying that it wasn't supposed to actually hurt and that normally he does it to everyone when they mess up. I asked him why he hit me the second time, because I didn't remember messing up that time, but he pointed out that I did, and now I vaguely remember. Nonetheless, I still couldn't fully accept his apology because it was still uncalled for, especially since he only hit me even though everyone - including himself - messed up at some point. And, as it turns out, the professor had noticed after all; she sympathized with me, saying that his behavior was uncalled for, and that she would talk to him about it.

[Error: unknown template qotd]Well, when it actually happened, asleep at home in Texas like I always was at 5:52 AM Central in 3rd grade (and, for that matter, almost always was in any grade from elementary to high school). I first found out about it on the news that morning about 3 hours later.

Not terribly interesting compared to the experiences of people who were actually in New York at the time, but at least the idiotic political opinion I came up with soon afterwards is made fun of by this userpic.

You'll need a Starman to repost this entry
matt1993: (you must wait)
Well, looks like my PSL-styled userpics are gonna be late this year, as it's already August 11 (or August 12 in some timezones) and I'm only up to the K's (I'm going alphabetically by the original userpics' filenames on my computer). So, no replacing my regular userpics this year either. I've gotta start making the PSL-styled userpics right after I make the regular ones...

By the way, I bet some of you have been wondering, "Are you also going to make alternate versions of your userpics for real holidays instead of just for the anniversary of the Internet's worst webcomic?" Yes, I actually have been considering recreating my userpics in alternate styles for the following holidays (but not necessarily the very next time each holiday occurs), in order from most to least likely:

- Christmas (By baking Christmas cookies based on my userpics. Might be too time-consuming, though.)
- Halloween (Carving my userpics onto jack-o'-lanterns. All those pumpkins might be too expensive, though, and like the Christmas cookies, probably will be too time-consuming.)
- Easter (Drawing my userpics on Easter eggs. Might be a little time-consuming, but not as much so as the Christmas cookies or jack-o'-lanterns; however, I'm slightly less interested in making this style)
- St. Patrick's Day (Making all my userpics green-tinted. Since that's not as unique to each userpic [for lack of a better phrasing] as the other styles, I probably won't do this one, but then again, I might)

:)

Trick-or-repost to all and to all a good night!
matt1993: (2010 nnwm procrastinator)
Today I finally came up with a new system to help me not only avoid procrastinating my creative vortexes (and similar things), but avoid always working on things that I won't need to finish for a while just so I won't have to work on the ones that are due sooner!

Here's how it works: I already have a list of things to do sorted roughly from what I have the least time to do to what I have the most time to do, and things that I have practically unlimited time to do are also sorted by my willingness to wait until college to finish them. I also now have a scoring system that retroactively went into effect when I started typing this entry: I earn "procrastination points" when I work on creative vortexes, etc., and then get to "buy" procrastination with my procrastination points. Some examples of point values are as follows:

- Making one userpic (either a new one or a PrtSc Land-styled version of an old one) = +1/x procrastination point, where x is how far down the list PSL-styled or new userpics is (so if I make 3 new userpics, I get 3/44 of a procrastination point since new userpics are the 44th item on the list)
- Writing one paragraph of Moya's Space Log = +1/x procrastination point (x functions the same way as before)
- Adding or editing a line of code in a program or an object on a program form = +1/x procrastination point
- Watching 5 minutes of The X-Files, Roswell, Grey's Anatomy, etc. with [livejournal.com profile] pathvain_aelien = +1/x procrastination point
- Adding to one of my lists of creative vortexes = +1/10 of the procrastination points I'd get by actually making/doing whatever I wrote down

You get the idea - for everything in my to-do list, I have to define how much I need to do before I get 1/x of a procrastination point, and then keep it consistent. Getting procrastination points faster by doing things at the top of the list should encourage me to do those more, yet allow me to work on other things on my list when I get sick of working on stuff at the top.

Some example costs of procrastinating:

- Every Internet browser page load = -1 point unless I use it to work on something in my to do list. (Things that are actually important, such as checking my banking account online, will actually be put at the top of my to do list when I have to do them, so don't worry about me not getting to do something immediately important just because I don't have enough procrastination points)
- Playing video games = -1 point for every turn. What counts as a "turn" depends on the game; i.e., for some, a turn might end whenever I either beat a level or lose a life, or if I decide to play a Mario Party game or Pac-Man Party it'll be an actual turn, etc.

As you can see, it'll be just as arbitrary, yet consistent, as my earning procrastination points.

Now to see if it'll work! :)

EDIT: While it's been helping me avoid procrastination so far, it seems to be having me do too little procrastination because, now that I think about it, when I work on the first thing on my list, I should probably get more than one procrastination point for it, because that's not even enough to post one LJ comment. So, starting tomorrow (I added this part on the 19th), every instance of 1/x in the scoring is hereby replaced with 10/x. :)

Reposting this entry: priceless

Go look at your blog/journal. Find the last Fandom-related thing you posted. The characters in that post are now your team-mates in the Zombie Apocalypse. How [screwed] are you?

I actually have several different possible teams depending on what does or doesn't count as a "fandom-related thing". They are:

- /crazymegavideo/ and The Back of Us, because I joked that /crazymegavideo/ was on a top-secret mission from The Back of Us to steal [livejournal.com profile] glowing_dragon's water. I doubt TBOU has its own military considering all it did in my dream was get McDonald's to add prison cells, but watching /crazymegavideo/ fill herself up with water and roll over those zombies would be the best thing ever, regardless of whether or not it kills them.</weirdfetish>

- Mario, Luigi, Enya Mii, Moya Mii, and two Koopa Paratroopas, because my editing a screenshot of NSMBM could, in a broad sense of the term, count as fanart. As long as I'm fighting in an area with enough walls for the Paratroopas' shells to bounce off of and the Mario Bros., Brennan Sstrs., and I are adept at dodging them, we should be fine unless the shells end up hitting each other. Otherwise, it'll be pretty tough unless at least one of us has a Fire or Ice Flower. But either way, it has my all-time favorite strange juxtaposition (Seriously, cartoony plumbers from a video game and classy singers from real life?), so it'll still be awesome.

- Just Pac-Man, because of my maze in The World's Biggest Pac-Man. We'd better have a lot of Power Pellets...

- Garfield, Odie, Jon, Liz, Ed (from some restaurant in the Garfield strip, I'm assuming), and one of those guard dogs that's always barking at Garfield, because of my latest Garfield Randomizer comics. The guard dog would be useful as long as one of us can train him to only attack the zombies, and Liz might find the cure to the zombie virus, but I doubt the others would be much help.

- Just the simple dog from Hyperbole and a Half, because she's in my most recent userpic. That would definitely end badly.

How screwed are you?

She -- yes, she -- would probably look like either Enya in a Mario costume or Enya in Super Mario World style like in this userpic. She'd probably tell me to be more optimistic, because everyone wants me to be more optimistic.

On-a my way to-a your journal!

It's hard to describe this journal in just a few paragraphs... but I'll try

Just an autistic guy born in 1993 (hence the username) who's had this journal since I was 14. Has trouble phrasing things well especially in earlier entries, so keep that in mind.

My interests have fluctuated in the 17 years since I've had this journal, but the following has remained constant:
- I like Mario games (mainly the platformers, Mario Kart, Mario Party) and Super Smash Bros.
- I like Garfield
- I like Homestar Runner
- I like Enya
- And I've always loved the idea of wacky crossovers between ANY of my interests, whether it's in the form of a short-lived webcomic in 2006-2008, a short-lived backwards lyrics site in 2008, writing down weird dreams in 2009-2011, playing Tomodachi Life a lot in 2014-2016, or what most of my posts are about these days: playing around with Character.AI starting in 2023. I still can't believe I'm actually in a world where an AI of Enya can talk to AIs of Mario or Garfield or even my favorite obscure characters like Mary O. from Super Mario Maker. :O
