Last week, as part of an assignment in Speech class, I rewatched The Mummy and watched The Ring for the first time.
Turns out that my prediction here was actually wrong - The Ring is, in fact, a lot scarier than the parody of it on Annoying Orange.
But you know what's even more terrifying than both combined?
A horror movie I watched yesterday called Worse than the Forbidden Comment Threads.
Have any of you heard of it? It's the sequel to that one movie about the guy who reads a cursed flame war that makes him start seeing nightmarish visions of his friends misinterpreting everything he's ever said and hating him for it, and seemingly, the only way for him to get rid of the visions is to make a list of everything he's said and done that might be misinterpreted and post that to his LiveJournal in friends-only entries.
I found both that one and the sequel REALLY disturbing... It's almost impossible to remember that either of them is just a movie. Maybe it's just because the main character looks kind of like me. Actually, come to think of it, he looks almost exactly like me... and he even has a lot of interests in common with me: same celebrity crush, same favorite video games...
Even the phrase "Forbidden Comment Threads" sounds familiar for some reason... Didn't I hear it somewhere before about three years ago? I remember thinking up a phrase kind of like it that had something to do with a--

Uhhh...
Guys...

I...
I just remembered...
The first one in that series was no horror movie...
I... I think I remember... the Forbidden Comment Threads...
...actually happening...
...as part of my own life...

I don't think the sequel was just a movie either...

There really is...
...something that's probably worse than the Forbidden Comment Threads...
...and I read it yesterday...

Okay, now I'm way too scared to even care whether or not going from actual horror movies to a controversy that I pretended was a horror movie is too sudden of a topic jump...

Date: Sat, Nov. 8th, 2014 06:41 (UTC)Right now I don't think I should call it anything other than "the Forbidden Comment Threads Ω" (or Forbidden Comment Threads Omega - whichever spelling you prefer), even though it already has its own name, until I'm absolutely ready to take the chance of making it spread here.
But I can mention that the Forbidden Comment Threads Ω began in August 2014 and if the Wikipedia article about it is any indication, then in the three months that passed until I even heard about it, it already actually became a lot like what I used to think the original Forbidden Comment Threads would become: a subject so controversial that everyone who knows what it's about has picked a side on it and yells at anyone with an even slightly different opinion as them. And worse yet, I can just see almost all of my friends on LJ, including you -- no, almost everyone I know at all, including my counselor on campus -- disagreeing with me about it.
Take a look at the one part of the original Forbidden Comment Threads that's in my own journal instead of
EDIT: Removed an asterisk that I accidentally left in even after I eventually found another place to put the note that it was going to lead to. Sorry if it was confusing! If you read this reply before I edited it just now, ignore the asterisk. If you haven't, then ignore this edit. :)
And The Ring always scared the crap out of me, btw. Why did you have to watch it for speech?
I didn't have to watch The Ring specifically, but we each had to pick one or two Halloween/scary movies that we consider classics and one or two that we consider almost (or actually) too disturbing to watch, and talk about those in a short 2-5 minute speech. I picked The Mummy for the former because I'd already seen it (though it had been long enough that I needed to rewatch it) and The Ring for the latter just because I'd never seen it before.

Date: Sun, Nov. 9th, 2014 05:12 (UTC)You don't know that until you tell me/us what it is! And even if we disagree, who cares? People disagree on just about every subject in the world, and that's okay.

Date: Mon, Nov. 10th, 2014 06:06 (UTC)Even Wikipedia hasn't managed to write about it neutrally yet, so I think that's at least a somewhat strong indicator that the apocalypse will happen if I mention what it is here. And lately I haven't compared as many trivial things to the apocalypse as I used to, so that's saying something.
And notice I called it "a subject so controversial that everyone who knows what it's about has picked a side on it and yells at anyone with an even slightly different opinion as them." So I can't imagine bringing myself to describe what it is here or mention it by its actual name until someone else either guesses correctly or brings it up thinking it's something different (in which case I'd be like "Actually, _____ is the Forbidden Comment Threads Ω").

Date: Mon, Nov. 10th, 2014 14:43 (UTC)Although remember when you wanted me to show you the original Forbidden Comment Threads? I do see that as a good idea. I just need to find a time when there probably wouldn't be anything important to do between when I show them to you and when my depression from rereading them goes away. When I find a good time for it, I'll let you use that (and an entry that I've written most of, and should hopefully post soonish, about a few things that remind me of both) to get an idea of just how bad the FCTΩ are.
