I think I'm more likely to go through with the trading cards for every userpic than I am to go with the Tarot card idea, though, now that I've thought up some possible elemental types (some from actual RPGs, some... not), interactions between said types, and a few other properties.
For example: - Userpics with Enya in them would do much less (or maybe no) damage to "Cat-type" userpics like my Garfield one because Enya loves cats. - The /crazymegavideo/ userpic would recover health when attacking Water-type userpics (any userpic that happens to have water in it even in the background). - "Rant-type" (e.g. "game theory ruined my life!", "who is scully?!"... maybe it should be the "Yell" type instead) and "Depression-type" (e.g "sad stick war") userpics do extra damage to my default userpic, but take extra damage from the painbow one. - Instead of attacking, the Backmask Mushroom userpic would be an item that would undo the opponent's last move.
I'm still not 100% set on doing this because there's some userpics (such as this one) that I'm not sure what the best way to treat them is. Even if I did, I wouldn't go all out and make a complete set of gameplay rules - I'd just try to make the userpics' stats as consistent with each other as possible. :)
I just waited almost an hour - or maybe even more - before posting this comment just because I couldn't stop thinking of more ideas. But still not enough that I'm sure I could go through with it eventually. :(
